Question about 1997 Jeep Tj

1 Answer

My idle is all over the place!

Ive had my 2002 tj for about 8 months now. Nothing but problems so far. Anyways when I start my jeep the idle jumps right up to 2000 Rpm and takes about 20 seconds to slowly bring its self down to 1000 and idle there. Then when I am driving it seems fine but bounces from around 600 up to 1000 when Im stopped and seems like its trying to return to a normal idle but usually cant although if I drive it for a long time it runs somewhat normal. I have a stock tj with a 4.0 and the only upgrades are a k+n air filter that seemed fine and a airraid cold throttle body spacer I installed after the problem started. Please help cause it getting cold outside and I dont want me engine to get hurt from starting so high. Thank you

Same problem on my 2001 TJ. Replaced cap, passed smoke test, supposed pinched hose fixed etc; light kept coming back on usually right after a cold start every other week or so. Three months later after trip to dealer and $367, it was due to an intermittenent evap cannister purge solenoid.

When started idels high about 2000 rpm then drops when hot cold ?

the iac probably has carbon built up around it this controls the idle speed try cleaning it first,if not it could be a bad iac or a vaccum leak that the iac takes some time to compensate for to control idle.

You haven't changed everything...map sensor controls spark and fuel mixture as does the throttle position sensor, also check the idle control valve...Don't just buy stuff...do testing first.

No power to dash or dome light in 2003 jeep tj.

As far as the guage issue it is most likely a problem with the body control module, have a trouble code test run on the BCM to determine the issue, the stalling is caused by the loss of the idle strategy learning when the battery went dead, the best thing to do is the following procedure I use to clear this issue.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls (or very low idle) near or at idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
