Got it scanned and it's P0420: Catalyst efficiency below thresholdbank 1. They said it could be a bad catalytic converter or oxygen sensor. I borrowed a scanner and tried to measure the oxygen sensor readings over time.Sep 8, 2011

When it is cool in the morning, like around 50 degrees my 2003 izuzu rodeo will start but will idle rough then stall until it is warmed up.then it will run fine but it hesitates for a little and pings.

is it petrol or diesel if petrol spray the plug leads with WD 40 or start it late at night and see if there are small sparks running along the spark plug leads
best of luck

Catalyst Efficiency

Who installed the new one? Muffler shop or? Why did you replace catalyst in the first place? Emissions test failure?

Code p431 and p421

P421=Warm up catalyst system efficiency below threshold, bank 1
P431=Warm up catalyst system efficiency below threshold, bank 2
Sounds like you may have clogged or damaged catalyst converters or bad 02 sensors.
Those codes I think are taking from after the catalyst by the sensors in the exhaust pipes. Be careful taking it to a mechanic for further checking since the catalyst converters are not cheap through them. If you need to replace the converters, shop around and get prices on aftermarket parts. Don't be ripped off by a hungry mechanic or especially a dealer.

Installed an engine from a 1999 isuzu rodeo into a 2000 isuzu rodeo. But wiring harness to coil package is different it does not seem to be making contact to spark plug and engine is missing fire. engine...

Hi,

Thank you for contacting fixya.com.

Since the spark plug is not coming in contact the engine light is flashing. Otherwise take your car to the nearest auto zone and check if any code is stored in the computer or not to get it fixed. However a flashing engine light means the ECU has detected a misfire strong enough to damage the catalyst in the cat.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

Iput a new alarm sistem on my 2005 odyssey and chek engine light came on, code p 0420

P0420 = catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 1)

I think it is a coincidence that the check engine light came on with this code at the same time as you installed the new alarm.

the power train control module or computer checks the output of the oxygen sensors (pre-catalyst and post-catalyst) and compares them. When the post-catalyst sensor output starts to resemble the pre-catalyst sensor output with little difference, the computer sets the catalyst efficiency code. Check the output of the oxygen sensors. A worn out or lazy oxygen sensor might be at fault. If the sensors check okay, then the catalytic converter may need to be replaced. This is unusual for a 2005 unless the engine has been having misfires. Raw unburned fuel will quickly destroy a catalytic converter.

Hi, i have a 2000 rodeo with p0420 catalyst insuffienct code. I have change all o2 sensors and take out the convertors.

the pcm has to monitor the converters, if they are not in place this code will never go away, also it is a federal offense to remove them , so I suggest having new ones installed

Vsc and check engine light is on . Had it read and code p0420 came up. Autozone said it could be an air leak in exhaust, AF sensor error, fuel system fault or faulty catalytic converter. Is there a cheap...

DTC P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threashold (Bank 1)

The ECM uses sensors mounted before and after the three-way catalyst (TWC) to monitor its efficiency. The first sensor, and Air Fuel ratio (A/F) sensor, sends pre-catalyst A/F ratio information to the ECM. The second sensor, a heated oxygen sensor (O2S), sends post-catalyst information to the ECM. The ECM compares these two signals to judge the efficiency of the catalyst and the catalyst's ability to store oxygen. During normal operation, the TWC stores and releases oxygen as needed. The capacity to store oxygen results in a low variation in the post-TWC exhaust stream as shown below.
If the catalyst is functioning normally, the waveform of the heated oxygen sensor slowly switches between RICH and LEAN. If the catalyst is deteriorated, the waveform will alternate frequently between RICH and LEAN. As the catalyst efficiency degrades, its ability to store oxygen is reduced and the catalyst output becomes more variable. When running the monitor, the ECM compares sensor 1 signals (A/F sensor) over a specific amount of time to determine catalyst efficiency. The ECM begins by calculating the signal length for both sensors (for the rear oxygen sensor, the ECM uses the output voltage signal length). If the oxygen sensor output voltage signal length is greater than the threshold (threshold is calculated based on the A/F sensor signal length), the ECM concludes that the catalyst is malfunctioning. The ECM will turn on the MIL and a DTC will be set.
Hope this helps :)

How do i replace a starter

If your Rodeo is a 4WD, the front axle is in the way so you'll need to pull down the exhaust pipe on the left side , and that's no easy task. The 17mm nuts on the exhaust manifold flange are the locking style, and often break. The pipe is one big piece including the catalyst that passes over the crossmember supporting the trans, so that would need to be removed, also. If you don't have access to a lift, I wouldn't recommend trying this one. If it's a 2WD, it's much easier and can be done on jack stands. You can just slide the unit foreward after you unbolt it to remove it. The starter is held on by two bolts that run straight up. You'll see them, I believe you'll need a 14 mm socket. The heavy load lead is a 12 mm, on the top of the unit. A short 1/4" drive socket and ratchet will get ahold of it. Then disconnect the solenoid connector with a pocket sized flat head screwdriver.
Make sure you disconnect the battery first!

When is my 2004 rodeo due for a tune up

P0420 means Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold, Bank 1
It means that your catalytic converter, in the exhaust system is not working fine, as its emissions are polluting the air too much.

The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system. The way to test this part is by doing an emission test. The two OBD codes that you are getting are already a test telling you that the converter must be replaced, unless an emission test done at a garage says the opposite.

This kind of problem will trigger the check engine light, and your car will also waste too much fuel.
You also risk to get in trouble if the car goes through an Air Pollution control, as the car won't pass an emission test in this condition.

To conclude, the Catalyst System must be replaced, the O2 Sensors are fine.

This is a repair that should be done at a garage, however you can find DIY instructions here:How to Replace a Catalytic Converter or you can get more detailed instructions, and step by step illustrated procedure purchasing a repair manual.
