I AM AN ASE CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND HAVE JUST OPENED UP MY RAV4 TRANSMISSION. I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS WORN GEARS. YOU DID NOTHING WRONG. JUST A POOR DESIGN. THE CONTACT BETWEEN THE 5TH GEAR AND DRIVE GEAR IS VERY MINIMAL AND JUST A LITTLE TOO MUCH WEAR CAUSES THE PROBLEM. ONCE IT HAPPENS ONE TIME YOU ARE DONE. UNLESS YOU HAVE A GOOD DEAL OF EXPERIENCE IT IS NOT AN EASY FIX. HOWEVER THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT HAVE TO COME OUT TO DO THE FIX. THERE IS A PLATE ON THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION THAT COMES OFF TO ACCESS THIS GEAR CLUSTER AND SYNCRO'S.

Well if your car is manual, I think I got a salution.

I had a shifting problem on a mazzda protege 2003.
Now I dont know if there are any pordector panels on a Rav4 but if you jack up the front of the vehicle, you can than locate the joint where the rod from the shifter conects to the transmition rod. The movement of the shifter is passed on through the joint. What happens on many older cars is that the little plastic peice that sits in between the joint and recieves all the friction whares off. Then it can so happen that when you shift into 5th gear, the shifter has already crashed into its borders and you think it has successfuly shifted when really the linkeg (joint) is so lose that it barely shifted in and can jump out of gear at any time. So I would recomend you to titan the joint and posibly replace the plastic layer.

Hope this was useful

Toyota Prado 97 (petrol). Can jump start but has loss of power when put in gear or lights, whipers or anything else turned on. Battery indicator says ok.

It sounds like you might have a bad alternator. You can't always trust you gauges. Jump it off again and check the voltage at the battery. You should have 14 volts. If it is less then that you have a bad alternator. Good luck.

1st and 5th gear jumps out of it's position. Revers gear do's not engage gear from time to time

if this is a manual gearbox then its the indent springs in the selector rod movement inside the gearbox and this will involve removing the gearbox if i have correctly located the fault ,but without the make and model of vehicle i cannot say for certain as it could be the gearchange mechanism movement inside the cars cab and if tis cable then a outer sheaf on a cable could be loose and come out of its crimped holder
