The sounds like the cluch went bad. the smell and the reason you cant shift gears is due to the clutch. the clutch is burning and thats the smell, when the clutch gets low and slips it smells and sometimes it just blows apart due to wear. have the clutch checked and you will find it needs replacing. hope this is helpful have a good day.
When your gears slips, it could be a few things. It could be a worn linkage, transaxle may be loose, shift link does not move freely, could be a worn shift fork, or a gear bearing retainer loose or broke. You could have dirt between the clutch cover and engine. I would check these first before you look at the transmission. Make sure your transmission fluid is level though. It may need changed with a new filter.
The only way to repair it will be to remove the transmission and tear it down to see what broke. I have the same transmission in one of my vehicles (4L60E) and had the exact problem, 1st and 2nd, no 3rd gear. It turned out the 3-4 clutch pack was burnt up and had to be replaced. The labor involved with removing and disassembling the transmission is so great that it makes sense to rebuild the transmission, not just replace what is broken. So i would say it's time for a transmission rebuild or purchasing a crate transmission from someone like jasper.
whats going on have you tried a clutch test to see if was any good and if you just replaced it i hope you blead it real good it take about 20 30 bleads to get all air out and if you did check the lines there may be a leak on the bladder that you cant see let me know
ive only seen this one other time on a diesel. what happened to ours the center hub of the clutch disk broke with no warning. it seems the high torque of these engines are ******* the clutch disk. sure hope this helps a clutch job is alot cheeper than a transmission.
