How do I remove the rear pinion shaft from a 1998 GMC Jimmy 4x4 to replace the bearing ?

you will have to remove the axles first ,then the crown wheel then the pinion flange and pull the pinion shaft out past where the crown wheel was . From the fact that you had to as how to do and that setting up a diff is not just a matter of changing a bearing I strongly recommend to you that you have this job done by an accredited transmission shop as failure to properly reassemble and adjust the settings will cost you a large amount of money

I see a red flag here. If they don't look the same, they may have different gear ratios. This is critical in a 4 wheel drive. Front and rear gears have to match

like all rear axels, their is a drain plugg sometimes at the bottom but the top one is for refill. usually, a 3/8 socket wrench is used directly in the plug. turn counter-clockwise to unscrew it and fill with appropriate gear oil (80w90)

Use a slide hammer, bearing puller and adapter to remove the old axle bearing.

special tools are required if the bearings are also to be serviced.

I would say if you don't have the tools and the time, I would take it to a garage.

How to get the rear wheel bearing out of 99 gmc jimmy

Dear Jimmy,
This repair is an intrusive repair if you have never done it.A chilton's manual can be purchased at your local auto parts store for $20 for your vehicle. Jack up the rear of vehicle and support it.Remove the rear tires. If the vehicle came with disc brakes remove the caliper and bridge, if not then remove the brake drum.Remove the rear diff cover, with a drain pan to catch the fluid.Remove your rear pinch thru bolt, your pin will then slide thru.Push both axles in to release and remove the u clips on the inside of the carrier assy, then pull both axles out.Remove the outer axle seal, throw away, ten using a bearing puller tool remove the bearing from the axle tube, install new bearing ad seal with drivers and reinstall axles.any other questions get back to me...I'm here to help!!!

Replace rear axel bearing on 4x4 5.3 Litre gas engine

Loosen differential cover and let oil drain. Remove cover, remove U lock from axel. Pull axel out. Remove bearing seal then bearing. Install new bearing, seal and reinstall axel. Reinstall U lock and new cover gasket. Fill with 75-90wt gear oil. Now I know that sound pretty straight forward. But there are some things to remember. The U lock can be difficult to remove sometimes. The most important thing is the seal, you will need to make sure it gets seated correctly and not torn when installing axel.
