are your back up lights not coming on when you put it in reverse? I just changed my trans. and didn't change this and now mine don't work either. I do know it is on the trans. and there are only two options when looking at the trans. They are both located near were the shifter cables attach to the trans.

Jack the car up, take the drivers side tire off. It's mounted to the drivers side rear section of the transmission, axel high, follow the wires.
Not on the top of the transmission like some books say.

My 2001 chevrolet is shifting VERY hard, tires sometimes spin, in every gear. I would really appreciate any advice. No one can tell us what it is.. In and out of garages and no change.. Very frustrated...

hello, first of all you didn't say if trans auto or manual, I guess is auto Right!
If so, there's a solenoid for every gear, the solenoid may need ground or be replaced Anyways, before do that, I recomend you to check trans fluid and go to autozone for scan it,
even althought there's not any check engine light, there may be some saved codes already!

2001 cavalier 5spd trans looking for the location of the back light switch

You have to jack up the vehicle and get to the switch from underneath. The B/U lamp switch is located on the transaxle and has a connector going to it with two wires... a light green and a pink colored one.

Key is stuck with a manual transmission

There is a shift lock interlock mechanism. It is controlled by the reverse switch in the trans. Check and see if you have back up lights with key on in rev.

Look for the fuse that controls the back up light.

There could be a problem in the column, but start with the simple stuff first.

Hope this helps.
