Hi have a UK toyota auris with a difficult and loud shift into reverse gear - only happens intermittently and usually when engine warm and having parked on a slight slope. Fluid level has been checked and is OK. Anyone any ideas??

reverse clunks and groans especialy on a slope, now this might seem simple to repair but it means removing the gearbox as the fault is caused by wear on the selector for reverse gear which is allowing it to move with gravity plus a bit of wear on shaft that it slides on as well.and some wear in the actual reverse gear itself ,cheap solution is turn engine off when selecting reverse but this doesnt always work as sometimes it nigh on impossible to get into gear without a bit of motion .Another tip is use a grease gun and pump some LM grease into gearbox say about half a pound (300 grms) this will take some of the play up and help with any slight oil leaks around the casing and the drive shaft seals.Or the old fashioned way was to put some fine sawdust in gearbox but its not recomended.

With the engine off see if the shift between 1st to 2nd feel,s free if not it could be the cable check the clutch is disengageing all the way it should go into reverse without crunching, other then that it could be a synchro ring worn check that the gearbox has the right oil in it.

94 explorer a4ld intermittant 2-3 shift

Are you sure your fluid level is correct? When they don't shift until warmed up,that is usually dirt or low fluid.
I would get a coupla cans of SEA-FOAM trans. treatment,NOT the motor treatment. Follow directions and sit in the car shifting it thru all gears many times. Take it out on freeway and kick it down to make it shift down and let up suddenly to make it upshift. Do this several times.
If it starts working for you,do a filter/fluid change really soon. I have saved them this way,but it's about 50/50 that you'll need a PROPER rebuild or replacement. There is dirt in there somewhere or the pump is giving up on you. don-ohio

1985 toyota motor home. 4 cyl. 22re engine. goes slowly into reverse when transmission is cold, but when it warms up, it wont go into reverse. If I give it more gas, it will sometimes catch briefly, but...

Change the fluid and filter. If i remember correctly reverse and third gear share the same band and clutch pack. Some transmissions you could tighten the band on it.

After running for some time, the clutch becomes gradually harder and shifting gears becomes difficult and often sets after a loud crank noise.

Hi probely the clutch pressure plate is ready for replacing or the clutch arm is seizing onto the shaft have a garage to have a look on a ramp when the car is warm with the problem available to see and try for them self's.

Hope this helps.

Jeep Wrangler 1998 straight drive has difficult times going into reverse gear. I don't drive it every day, usually towing it behind my RV. It seems better when I drive it more, but is still difficult to...

if this is a 5 speed manual transmission...all you need to do before putting your jeep into reverese is puting it into first gear and then shifting it to reverse to avoid any grinding or problems shifting into reverse...this isn't a problem just a poor jeep design by not installing an extra gear to eliminate this grinding or shifting problem

Hi Jun,
I would check the auto trans oil level and condition first. For the engine hard starting I would check the plugs, fuel filter and coolant temperature sender unit a well.
