Bronco tranny wont shift out of first

I drive an 89 ford bronco 4x4 with a 5.0 and automatic transmissin with overdrive. i had the transmission rebuilt a year ago and it was running fine, when i was going down the highway at about 70 i started smelling trans fluid, i took it home and a line was out of the back of the trans, i put it back and topped it off with fluid but now it wont shift out of first, it shifts into a neautral state until you get back on it. any help???

Please check fluid level...also could be dirty/filter fluid? Try a bottle of Lucas Oil Transmission Stabilizer fluid...can be added without draining anything. Hope this helps.

Hello, my name is Tim. My uncle has a 89' Bronco ii. While cruising on flat, level highway, the transmission kicks in and out of overdrive. Do you have a suggestion? The transmission has been replaced,...

Durango would shift in and out of overdrive while driving at a steady rate. Replaced the throttle position sensor and fixed the problem. here are a few causes for a bad tps. transmission shift issues, bucking, jerking, idle surging, engine cutoff, hesitation on take off, surge while cruising down highway. have a good day ! tps is used by computer to monitor throttle position and adjust the speed, fuel and air to match throttle position. if tps is bad it will send wrong info. to computer. hope this helps !! if all else fails clean maf sensor. check tps first.

When driving down the road in overdrive the van will downshift automatically and not shift back into overdrive on its own. Is there a sensor to check?

only internal transmission parts and solonoids that your average joe should never attempt to pull apart. ive been a mechanic for 10 years, and i wont go near an automatic transmission! they are evil! it might just need a fluid and filter change, and it might need a rebuild...only a transmission shop can diagnose those problems, and those are the only places i would even let near my transmission! todays trans. are all electronically controlled via an ECM (engine control module) which can also be having problems. it's impossible to diagnose correctly without looking inside the transmission, so id take it to the closest tranny shop and have them take a look. hope this helps.

The auto tranny is not shifting and is reving up way to high!

try shifting it manually from low,let rpms rise, then 2nd,let rpms rise, then to drive and see what happens. It could be bad drive clutches in the transmission but could be a sticky valve body in the transmission,if it does work by shifting manually add 1\2 pint of dot#3 brake fluid to the transmission fluid to assist in cleaning the pistons in the valve body and seals and to help lubricate parts and seals

3rd and 4th gear clutches are the same. The overdrive section is worn out thus resulting to this problem. have the transmission repaired with a new overdrive section.

Sounds like the shift kit is warn out in the transmission. The overdrive line may not be able to provide enough hydrolic pressure to engage the gears to move the truck. When you switch to regualr drive, that line is able to build the hydrolic pressure to engage the gears. At a certian speed (for the transmission, certian hydrolic pressure) there is enough pressure to engage the gears in overdrive, but go below that, and you have to start in drive again. If this is the case, there is no easy fix for that and I recomend taking it to a transmission shop to have your shift kit examined. Opening up an automatic transmission requires specalized tools, clean shop enviroment, and knowlage more then the average back yard machanic has.
