98 GMC JIMMY V6 4.3L VORTEC 4W DRIVE

Hard to start when it's cold, runs like it's missing...tune up??? One spark plug is obstructed by the steering column, how do you gain access to that one spark plug? Thanks for your time.

I use a socket that has an end on it that a wrench fits over it. I put the socket on then use the wrench to turn the socket. It takes a bit of effort because you can only turn the wrench a little before you have to reposition it back on the socket again. I've tried the going through the fender well and removing the tire but this is what works best for me.

Remove the left wheel to access the left side plugs. For cylinder 3 (behind the steering column) use a long extension and a spark plug socket with a built in universal joint (3/8 drive, 5/8 socket). It's a tight fit and you may need to remove the rubber insert in the socket to get it on the plug. Because of all the stuff installed at the top of the engine, it's a lot easier to remove both wheels to get at all 6 plugs. This is a job you don't want to do too often, so use iridium plugs (good for up to 100K miles).

How do I replace the num 3 spark plug on 98 gmc jimmy

Use a socket 5/8 with swivel extension through wheel well. This is the best way to get to all the plugs via wheel well. You don't have to touch the steering shaft at all. I have done a tune up on mine more times than I can remember

I have a 99 jimmy with the 4.3 vortec. I have spark, and 61 pounds of fuel pressure. when turned over it act like it starves for fuel and is so close to starting but wont even with starting fluid. I d

It can take 70psi to start a vortec engine cold. It should start on starting fluid tho.
You might want to look at a couple of spark plugs to see if they are in good enough condition to run. The spark could be weak under compression if the plugs are worn.

I have a 4WD 1998 GMC Jimmy 4.3L Vortec V6 and it started running hot then it shut off and wouldn't start back up... do you think there would be any way to fix without replacing the whole engine

IS THEIR WATER IN THE OIL? CHECK THE PLUGS TO SEE IF THEIR WET.YOU MIGHT PUT SOME PLUGS IN IT IF WET TO SEE IF IT WILL RUN.THEN PUT SOME HEADGASKETS ON IT.BUT IN REALITY NEW MOTOR WOULD BE BEST.

98 gm blazer has black soot from muffler giving code insufficiant switching o2 sensor bank 1 and 2 any ideas ?

Your Jimmy is running rich, air fuel ratio is not correct. Start with cleaning your MAF sensor, a dirty MAF sensor will cause your engine to run rich or lean, other causes would be a faulty fuel pressure regulator. Start with the simple and to common and try cleaning your MAF sensor, you can pick up a can of MAF sensor cleaner at most auto parts store like Auto Zone or Part Source.
Also make sure your engine is running at the proper operation temperature 190", cold running engine will cause the ECM to run your engine rich. Causing the back soot and fouling up your spark plugs and intake ports with carbon.
The ECM was programed to recognize the 4.3 vortec to run at 190" and anything cooler will cause it to run rich and poor on economy.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

My 1995 jimmy starts hard. I have to pump gas pedel 5 or 6 times while turning it over?

it's a 95 with probably over 100,000 miles with a vortec engine. i would change the fuel filter, plugs and wires (simple tune-up) and every fill up i would put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the tank or take it to a firestone or other shop that can do a fuel system cleaning and injector cleanig

My 1996 Gmc K2500 with a 7.4l is miss firing. runs good till it warms up, then the problem starts. I have no codes in the computer. new fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter

Very good chance that it's bad fuel injectors and/or fuel pressure regulator. Very common with the 96-2000 L29 motor (Vortec 7.4L)
Replace with better injectors, the OEM ones are NOT WORTH cleaning. Go to http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/general-discussion/technical-maintenance/213662-96-99-454-vortec-owners.html

a tune up would be the first step; plugs wires and fuel filter. then try a new rotor cap and button. if there still is a problem then check and see what you are getting for fuel pressure.
