Question about Mitsubishi Montero Sport
I have had the same problem, found out it is the wiring harness off the transmission. When it gets wet, it would cause the transmission to shift hard. After it dried out it would be fine. Mitsubishi has a TSB out on this. You have to remove the wiring harness and check all of the wires, its best to strip them back to make sure that you have no corrosion. Heat shrink them and reattatch. Seams like a error on Mistusbishi design. The bracket that holds the harness it what caused the cut in the wire then the short when it gets wet. Take it to your dealer to have it checked out.

Took it to a transmission shop. They said they thought mechanically transmission was fine but couldn't fix problem. Took it to Mitsubishi Dealer told me I needed a new transmission- $6,000...I don't think so. Had it towed to a trusted transmission shop. We replaced the shift solenoids, still same problem. Finally took it to an incredibly smart general mechanic who spent hours diagnosing it and was able to discover it was a shorted wire! He also told me not to buy MItsubishi autos!

SOURCE: trns shift problem
On chrysler product vehicles that use the electrical solonoids inside the trans oil pan can usually just be removed and cleaned and they will usually function correctly again. They have a tendency to get laquered up and stick if the trans fluid has not been serviced regurarly. This happenes from the neon all the way up to the dodge 3/4 ton pickups with the gasoline engines.
