From your discription I think you have a cylinder fireing on an open valve. Meaning the valve is not closing completely as it should before detonation. Then cause could be anything from a burnt valve to carbon build up.

What color smoke white means coolant. Blue means oil. You could have loss of compression causing the drag the noise could be a air or coolant leak

Yesterday, radiator was making boiling, gurgling noises. Assumed it was thermostat, replaced. While warming engine to see if it corrected problem, engine idle began oscillating pretty heavy.

run engine and c if what looks like steam comes out of tail pipe if it does u have a gasket problem ur burning coolant either head or possible intake gasket --if no smoke check water pump for fluid movement and noise and also check ur fan for air flow and operation the engine surging would more than likely point towards engine burning the coolant u can also pull the plugs to c if any r wet

How do you know that you have an exhaust leak

Car will be getting a little louder, you may hear a ticking noise if the leak is at the exhaust manifold. You can also start your car up in the morning, and look under neath. If it is leaking, you may see smoke coming out in the middle of the system or any other place than the tail pipe.. All exhaust should come out of the tail pipe only. Good luck and don't forget to rate this solution thanks

Tail pipe making loud popping noise while idling

Sounds like it's back firing. Check your timing belt. If it has issues get it changed immediatly. If the belt slips far enough you can destroy your valves.

I just bought a 1986 BMW 325 that starts fine when cold. When the engine is hot and I try to start it puts out black smoke and idles rough and dies. Where do I start to look to fix this?

Coolant temperture sensor. Look at the front of the cylinder head. There will be a square 3 pin connector. This should be the one you need to replace. What happens is that it is stuck telling the computer that the coolant is cold thus providing more fuel to start. Once the system is warm this excess fuel is not needed and can create the black (raw fuel) smoke that is coming from the tail pipe once warm. This is a very simple repair. Let me know if you need anything else.

Car suddenly started running poorly, Difficult to start, and bogs badly when gas pedal is pushed. Gradual acceleration up to 2500 to 3000 rpm allows it to go but it does not get better when warmed up. Some...

popping out of the tail pipe is usually a tell tail sign of a timing issue. Pull the timing cover and hand crank the engine. If the marks on the crank and cam line up check vacuum. If needle fluctuates roughly 2in/hg take note(possible burned valves) Inspect the plugs for signs of carbon fouling(fuel injector issue). if the plugs show good burning with a yellowish white check compression. If compression is good check cylinder leak down. if cylinder leak down is less than 30%. check exhaust back pressure.

White smoke out rear tail pipe and water or black liquid leaking out muffler under truck

Assuming this is happening under normal operating temperatures, it has blown head gasket written all over it. White smoke is steam and the only way that is coming from your exhaust once it's warmed up is that the head gasket has blown and started leaking coolant into the combustion chamber. You'll need to take your vehicle to a shop and have it repaired.
