1995 Accord Intermittent Cruise Control

In response to the request from "emissionwiz" for more clarification of the problem:
This same 1995 Honda Accord was stolen in Atlanta, GA in 2006 and trashed. It was recovered the next day and held 4 days before I got postcard in mail to come pick it up. The battery was dead and the gas tank empty and lots of damage. The insurance made it right including putting a new battery. Two years later, a month before the replacement battery warranty ran out, the battery went dead. The dealer, Nalley Honda replaced the dead battery to satisfy the battery warranty free of charge. Never having had Cruise Control problems before, the Cruise Control failed within minutes after leaving the dealer, Nalley Honda. The Cruise Control only works to maintain speed approximately 20% of the time after the battery swap. What could have been damaged and caused the Cruise Control to fail intermittently ? I can not just ignore this problem because I need the Cruise Control. The digital multimeter I use might be of some help locating the trouble. Maybe you could point me in the right direction so I can hem this in. I read specifications if a wiring diagram is available. As stated before, all indications from the instrument panel tell me the Cruise Control is ON.

The Velocity Speed Sensor or VSS signal may be faulty but how do I check the signal, with a meter?

Could the VSS be making the CRUISE CONTROL light next to the speedometer come on when I have not pressed the SET/decel button on the steering wheel after pushing in the Cruise Control Master Switch to the left of the steering column?

  • T4chnician Nov 16, 2008

Acording to the owners manual, USING THE CRUISE CONTROL1. Push in the Cruise Control Master Switch to the left of the steering column. The indicator in the switch will light. 2. Accelerate to the desired cruising speed above 25 mph (49 km/h). 3. Press and hold the SET/decel button on the steering wheel until the CRUISE CONTROL light next to the speedometer comes on. This shows the system is now activated. CANCELLING THE CRUISE CONTROL When you tap the brake or clutch pedal, or press the SET and RESUME buttons at the same time, the CRUISE CONTROL light on the instrument panel will go out and the car will begin to slow down. If you cancel cruise control by pressing the SET and RESUME buttons at the same time, the previously-set cruising speed is erased. To use the cruise control, accelerate to the desired cruising speed and press the SET/decel button. Pressing the Cruise Control Master Switch turns the system completely off and erases the previous cruising speed from memory. To use the system again, refer to USING THE CRUISE CONTROL.

I would take a look at the speed sensor because the cruise reads its signal off of this sensor

the fsm , has a cruise chapter, (stock car cruise , only)
and shows all tests to do. read it.

again. the FSM
http://hondatech.info/downloads/Auto/Manuals/Accord/

but the the ECU must be happy or most cars will not activate cruise.
some early car CARB egines, and are totally different. in this regard.

if PGM-FI system , use the diagnostic jumper to see scan DTC codes. (fuel injected system)
end of chapter 6 for howto.
chapter 16-254 ( end of PDF and chapter covers this)
89-91 FSM see it? 33.45 MB?
16-257 is the trouble shoot, chart. see that?
and voltage tests.
its all there,
can be bad inputs to cruise brain, bad actuators.
or pure mechanical failure.

My 2001 Grand Am won't start. Does it have a fuel shut off switch and where would it be located? Help

An elderly lady in my complex owns a 1995 Olds 88 with approximately 80,000miles on it. The car sits outside 7 months of the year in Ft. Myers from April- Oct. It has been relieable transportation up to now but now has a problem with the Cruise Control. Several mechanics have tried to fix it but have been unsuccessful. After the so called work the owner says the cruise control seems to reengage making her very uneasy.
Question: is it possible to disconnect the cruise control without affecting any other functions of the car?
Trying to be a helpful friend.
