Please keep check on the coolant level, in morning on first start when radiator is still cold open the radiator cap and rev the engine. Notice if there are bubbles and oil drops. I am suspecting head gasket leakage.

Hi, the idle is controlled by a valve on the throttle body, but it cannot control it if there is a big vacuum leak. Recommend you check all the hoses connected to the intake manifold for a leak.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r7427423-fix_poor_idle_high_idle_stalling_fuel . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

My bmw 318i 1994 will idle fine but as soon as i put my foot on the accelerator to rev it up it will stall and occasionaly back fire. any help will be much appreciated,

I'd check my spark plugs if I were you. They're not under a lot of pressure when the engine is idling however, when you rev it they have to work a lot harder and this is where the fault may lay.

If they are good, then check the HT leads. It definitely sounds like something to do with the ignition timing

check your main harness wire. The harness wire becomes brittle and will eventually short circuit your car. Stalling and hard starting is the initial symptom. If not replaced soon, your car will smoke and eventually affect your computer box

Rev counter falling below 1000rpm when warm, nearly stalling

If this is a 1.8 petrol model then the idling adjuster/throttle stop screw needs to be adjusted.Slight adjustment can be done without a diagnostic tool ,loosen the lock nut holding the throttle screw found near the throttle cable, adjust this in clockwise to increase revs.
