Re: problem need help
You are going to have to overhaul the trans, shifting problems can often be fixed without an overhaul, but when it slips the trans is toast, also replace the shift solenoids and the torque converter while your at it, they don't come with the kit but will need to be replaced.

Starting in about the mid 1980's automatic transmissions changed from fluid shifting to electronic shifting. In other words, your shift is by an electronic solenoid controlled by the computer. There is no Shift cable gong to the transmission. Just wires. You need to look for a loose or dirty electronic connection to the transmission.
4D flashing normally tells you that there is NO way for the ECM to know the transmission temperature, So I would make sure the temp sensor OF THE TRANSMISSION is hooked up properly. Try that and let me know.
Did this happen all of a sudden or did it kind of slip and grab, slip and grab?
The fluid level has to be checked by a garage and its condition also is important.
How many miles on this fluid change? don-ohio
This is an internal transmission failure the check engine light along with the D4 light flashing and the slipping is telling you this. What happens is the clutches internal in the transmission fail and no longer hold pressure and cause the transmission to fail triggering the check engine and D4 light.
I had a 97' olds with the same engine and had that exact same problem at around 130,000 miles. It could be your timing belt if you have not had it changed or you could try the crank sensor. I got lucky and only had to replace the sensor which is considerably cheaper than paying for the labor on a timing belt change.
It sounds like you have one of a couple problems. First, for the D4 light to be on and flashing, there is a problem the TCM (transmission control module) is seeing. If this is a V6, these transmissions are notorious for having problems internally, and need to be rebuilt at a transmission shop, or replaced. There is also a chance that either the third or fourth gear pressure switches have gone bad they will be the black and brown switches bolted to the top of the transmission. These can also cause this light flashing to occur. I dont understand the rest of your post. If you could clarify what you mean i could try to answer you question a little better
You are your own best judge on that, i got a 95 silverado with 160,000 mi. and would not think twice about driving and pulling anything across the country, but one thing i would recamend (if it dosent have one already) is an external trans. cooler.
