Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Check Engine light- catalytic converter

Been dealing with this for 2 years on & off. 1996 Gr. Cherokee Limited had a recall on Catalytic converter. We had repair done before we knew about recall, dealer reprogrammed PCM as part of recall. Fine for a week or two, mechanic said he couldn't figure it out said converter was fine. later discovered we had wrong converter, had it repaired again- fine for a while. then same issues, misfire poor running condition at times other times just fine. Now it is dying while i am driving or right after I start it up. Sometimes it won't start, turns over but won't start. Have replaced O2 sensors, ignition coil. Could it be PCM needs reprogrammed again? Help- I just had engine rebuilt & I can't afford a new car

Codes from last week were, P0351 P0420- we replaced ignition coil, drove fine for about a week.

Light came back & says again P0420 & new code which is related to a misfire. The recall was from Chrysler and done at a dealer, however we called them about this last summer & they say the recall has expired therefore so they can no longer address it- of course for a fee they will be glad to deal with me. How do I know if O2 Sensors are the right part?

It might be helpfull to know the codes of the "check engine"lite but it seems the PCM is the issue,be sure the O2 sensors were the correct ones and which dealer made the recall? an used-car one or a Chrysler one?if no solution, you should go to a chrysler/jeep dealer and talk to solve this because it is a recall involved and they should repair your SUV at no cost no matter the miles on the odo!.buena suerte!

How many oxygen sensors are there on a 1996 ford explorer 8 cyl., 4.0 eng.

The answer depends on the type of exhaust system you have. You will have either 3 or 4 total O2 sensors on your V8. If you have single exhaust with a single catalytic converter then you will have 3 O2 sensors (2 upstream sensors & one downstream sensor - "up or down stream" meaning before of after the catalytic converter). If you have either dual exhaust and/or two catalytic converters then you have 4 O2 sensors (2 upstream & 2 downstream). If you have an MIL light (malfunction indicator light, or "check engine light") the code will indicate "front bank / bank one", which is one of the 2 upstream O2's before the catalytic converter(s), or "rear bank / bank two", which is one of the O2's after the catalytic converter(s).

Is it dangerous to drive with a problem with the Catalytic Convertor 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder

no it is not dangerous, but it is illegal. the catalytic converter is an emission control device designed to regulate pollutants produced by the engine. if your coverter is plugged it can potentially cause damage to your engine because it does not allow exhaust to flow properly. this wont happen over weeks or months, but long term, such as years can cause damage.

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4 cyl, check engine returns obdi error code 72. Is this the catalytic converter? Car runs great, no other problems.

The code refers to the catalytic converter efficiency. It can be a plugged converter. leaking exhaust, vacuum leak, fuel pressure problem, or even low compression. You really need to have the ECU read with a scanner that will give you the POXXXX code instead of the 2 digit code. This will help diagnosis the problem much better.

1996 VW Jetta has an engine code of P1586 Engine

P0422 - Catalyst below threshold.

Catalytic converter is clogged or out of medium.

Replace it.

ACTUAL DIAGNOSTIC:

Fault Code Definition
Code P0422 indicates that the Bank 1 Main Catalytic Converter's emissions efficiency has fallen below the minimum allowable limit. This threshold is tracked by a Catalyst Monitoring Oxygen Sensor located on or near the outlet of the Catalytic Converter.

Symptoms

* Check Engine Light will illuminate
* In many cases, no abnormal symptoms may be noticed

Common Problems That Trigger the P0422 Code

* Defective Catalytic Converter
* Engine misfires have damaged the Catalytic Converter
* Internal engine damage resulting in high oil consumption and/or a leaking Head gasket has damaged the Catalytic Converter

Common Misdiagnoses

* Oxygen Sensors are replaced when the real problem is a damaged Catalyst
* Catalyst is replaced when the real problem is internal engine damage, which is producing elevated emissions levels
* Catalyst is replaced when a misfiring engine is the real problem

Replace muffler, not the catalytic converter which started to rattle. Stop running, will crank but will not start. can it be the catalytic converter.

if the converter is rattlin then it needs to be replaced because the element inside is broken. if the jeep still does not run try removing the catalytic converter to see if the restriction is too much. should start if the converter is restricted. if it doesnt maybe its whatever caused the converter to go bad in the first place
