Question about 1990 Jeep Comanche

Truck will start but when you release the key switch it stops

I first thought this was a fuel system problem, but after changing out the pump, fuel filter and the pressure regulator, I still had the same issue. I stumbled on to this only because I held the key switch in the start position a little to long. The truck will run if The switch is held into the start position, but as soon as you let the key switch return to the run position it stops. I have since changed the Ignition Switch (tilt wheel), key lock cylinder and the Ignition control module. After doing each one I had the same result. I also had a spare control unit and swapped them out and had the same result.
any help??

This could be several things. Before you changed the fuel pump, you should have checked to see if the problem is electrical, or mechanical first.

One of the first things you needed to do, was to check the fuel rail to see if you had the proper fuel pressure. This would have saved you a bunch if you had the proper pressure at the rail. You can purchase an inexpensive fuel pressure testor at Harbor Freight Tools.

The next thing you need to do is to find out if you have power at the spark plugs. If not, then you need to check out the distributor cap, rotor, plugs and plug wires. If these all are ok, then you need to check the ignition coil.

From there, if all seems ok, then you could have any one of several sensors bad, or a bad computer.

If you changed out the fuel pump yourself, then you must have some mehanical ability,

You need a new ballast resistor

    sorry such a quick post

just wanted to get to the point of what is wrong

to put you in the mindset of what is going on in your engine compartment and why.

as you probily know that a resistor cuts back the positive voltage and this is how th jeep runs when the key is in the run position.

but when you need to start the engine it need more voltage and this is why the engine will run in the start position

    i hope this helps

just call your local parts store and get a ballast resistor for your truck and install and you should be back on the road .

    good luck

The easiest way to relieve the fuel pressure is to start your engine and pull the Fuel Pump Relay - car should die. Now there is no fuel pressure. Turn the key to the off position and change out the fuel filter. Once the filter is changed, put the relay back in and prime the system - turn the key on (don't start) for a few seconds. Turn off, turn key on for a few seconds then start the car. Check for leaks by filter. Easy peasy. Hope this was helpful :-)

My 1999 honda odyssey started then stopped , thought it was out of petrol , put petrol in , car turns over but wont fire , any help ,

If it did run out of fuel, and apparently that is possible if you immediatly put some in, you may have to cycle the key on and off to get the fuel up to the engine again. You should be able to hear the fuel pump cut in and run for about 3 seconds when you first turn the key to the "run" position, and then stop. You could remove the gas cap, and have someone put their ear to it while you turn the key. If you don't hear it run, it may be the fuel relay switch if you're lucky, or the fuel pump if you're not.

Check the fuel pump wiring under the car. If the connectors are exposed to the elements they could be corroded or dirty causing intermittent problems. It could also be the ignition switch. One other thought. Some gm cars have the oil pressure switch tied in t the fuel pump, so the fuel pump shuts off in case of loss of oil pressure. Sometimes the oil pressure switch will cause problems with the fuel pump not working. You could check this out by using a jumper wire in the oil pressure switch connector to bypass the switch to see if there is any change in the fuel pump problem.

Your problem is in the security system. That will disable the fuel system, so a theif cant steal your car. I'd bet you will need to change the key and sensor for the key, it's part of the ignition switch.

Locate fuel filter, and safety switch to fuel pump

The filter is located at the rear seat, you have to remove it first, then you will see a cap attach with some screws. Inside that cap you`ll find the fuel filter. Before you change the fuel filter you have to release the fuel pressure first. To do that, first find the FUEL PUMP RELAY in the main fuse box located in the engine. Once you located open the fuel door and take off the cap and leave it open. Start the engine, take off the FUEL PUMP RELAY and leave the engine stop itself, when this occurs turn off the key, the you can take off the filter and changed it
