Question about 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT

1 Answer

What can it be

My son's 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT non turbo will not even click when turning ignition switch. He first tried replacing the the ignition switch but it was not the right one when he got the part. A auto person told him that if your lights and stuff activate when turning on the ignition, then it probably is not the ignition switch itself, it more than likely is the starter has quit. Can you confirm this diagnosis or should he/we be looking else where. Like I said only electronic ativate when turning ignition switch, no clicking noises or a hint of engine trying to turn over happens.

do you hear the fuel pump come on?

Just thought of this also... is it an automatic or manual? If it's a manual and you don't have the clutch pushed in the car won't start either.

It's very possible, if you turn on the car and have all the electrical systems turn on and you turn the key to start and no clicking or anything, chances are it could be the starter. Let me ask you this, when you turn the key to start do the headlights dim a bit/go out or interior lighting go out?

I have both a Stealth, and a 3000GT, so I guess you could say that know a bit about the platform. this sounds like one of three possible things.

  • Starter
  • Starter relay (in that funny shaped box behind the passenger side headlight)
  • "click click start" or maybe loose trigger wire at the starter
If you know anyone with a 3000, try to borrow their starter relay, it is about a 10 second swap, and you will know very quickly if it is the problem.

If the starter solenoid isn't even clicking, I am leaning heavily towards either a completely disconnected trigger wire, or a bad starter. If it is clicking, then it is most likely click click start

click click start occurs because Mitsu, in their infinite wisdom put a wire to the starter (the trigger wire) which was BARELY sized large enough to carry enough current to activate the solenoid on the starter, over time, and corrosion, the wire becomes too thin to carry enough current, so it does not fully engage the solenoid... the solution is to install a relay at the starter so the trigger wire closes the circuit in the relay from the hot power side of the relay to the trigger. The hot power side of the relay is ALWAYS on, and the wire is big enough to carry enough amperage. Thats the way I did it, you can also put the relay up by the battery, here are instructions for doing it this way, personally, I like the relay down tie-wrapped to the starter myself.

91 mitsubishi 3000GT 3.0 non turbo, having problems with check engine lite.pulled codes and got a vss code.speedo works, cruise works, cleard code and restarted to have light come back on any ideas?

Might well have to replace vss. First, try unplugging connector and clear using electrical contact cleaner to see if this helps. Fill socket with dielectric grease to keep moisture out.

94 Mitsubishi 3000gt non turbo where is the wiper motor relay

Why not pick up a Haynes car manual for your 3000GT at your local auto parts store. It will have the whole wiring schematic for your car in it. I believe that there isn't any relay, only a positional switch which may be your problem.

94 mitsubishi 3000gt will not turnover

Most starter solenoids are on the starter. There are 2 to 3 wires going to the starter, the big one from the battery is for the starter motor it's self. The smaller one is from the ign switch to the sol. That's the one I'm guessing your having problems with. When you turn the key do you get a "click" sound or just nothing? If there is a click then your getting power from the key. And the heavy gauge wire is not delivering power to the motor. Check at battery or if they use a terminal block

Accelration only occurs at high rpms...and now car won't start

if the problem is when u go into gears it could be the clutch is going out. when it slips i can cause reduction like that. after you accelerate the clutch has time to engage and will provide power. the clicking sound is something diffrent. try charging the battery not just jumping it. if the car doing the jumping is not providing the right amount of power it wont start.
