Rear window defroster wont work

Im new to car repair and im having some problems. when it gets cold and i start the car im the morning the front window unfogs but the back stays that way till later in the day. iv gone to an auto store and they said that rather than the fuse it might be the wiring. the problem is the fact that i know where it is but i domt know how to get it off without breaking it if you have any info that i can use please tell me its getting colder in ohio real fast.

    replaced switch with junkyard one, now indicator light comes on and relay works but won't stay on

    how do you turn on rear defroster on 97 saturn, I can't find the switch to turn it on?

    I've replaced my switch circuit board with multiple others from the scrap yard. Each one will work when I push the button, but it won't stay on like it should.

My saturn has a possible bad switch in the dash,by the traction controll. my machinic ask me to replace it. im having a hard time finding one. if there is no brakes in the wires on the window and the fuses are ok. probably the switch. i have allready replaced the window switches with much success.

With a 12 volt test light turn on the defroster and check for voltage at the grid connectors on both sides, if none is present the next step is to replace the switch/timer assembly.

Rear window defroster not working


Check obvious things first, fuses. Pull out your manual and look for locations. Second, there should be 2 wires going to the grid on the rear window defroster. Make certain they are still plugged in and the tabs have not been broken off, frequently happens at car washes when washing rear window. Third, take a close look at the grid of wire on the glass, looking for scratches. If scratched, you may be able to repair with a rear window defogger kit from your local auto store

Rear defroster doesnt work already reset breaker and check fuses but one fuse in manual not on panel


i think this is a grid type(wires) rear defroster as opposed to a fan style.then when you push the button to turn on the rear defroster you should hear a click this tells you the system is working from the fuse to the rear window.what you have to do is check the rear window grid(wires) with a test light and you will probably find some of the grids not working which indicates a break in the grid line and needs repair.you start with a test light at one end and you should see it light up brightly at one end of the grid and as you move along the grid wire to the other side of the window you should see the light gradually get dimmer,when you hit a spot were the light stops working you just have to norrow down the area of the break and mark it with a marker below the grid,when you have done the complete window you will know the areas that need repair.you can buy a defroster grid repair kit and repair it.follow the directions.before checking the grid wires check the area where the car wires connect to the window at both sides of the window.sometimes there is a problem in this area.

The rear window will not defrost. Also the defroster and heat are not working properly. It may start blowing warm air and then get cold. Once the heater stays on and Im driving for a distance it will...


i had a 2001 cirrus that did that i found that it was a vacum line for the defrost as for the rear window if the light is on in the buttonon the dash then you might want to see if the wire that goes to the defroster on the window are both hooked up

The indicator light works for the rear defroster on a 2000 Alero. However, the rear defrost does not work. Where do I start looking for the problem. The fuse has been replaced.


Have there been any children playing in the back window? Children are good at sctaching the small defrrroster grid lines. Look for small breaks in any of the lines, on break and the defroster wont work. these can be repaired and here are a couple of links if that is where your porblem is.

That definitely sounds like a short. If this started happening after the radio was installed, more likely than not, it's because they either spliced into the wrong wire or they nicked or cut the wire insulation, causing the short. You can look for yourself, just start at the defroster switch, and trace the wiring as far as you can go. Then do the same for the radio wiring. Somewhere along the line, you'll find the problem. Or take it back to Best Buy and make them fix the problem. I would advise caution on that though, as they can install a stereo, but that doesnt make them experts on automotive wiring. Best bet if you dont want to do it yourself, take the Jeep to a good garage or a dealer, have them find the problem, and if it turns out Best Buy caused it, take the bill for the repair and let them pay it.

the blendor actuators strip out the gear inside the actuator cases on these all the time. replace the actuator.

no heat can be a t stat problem and the defroster sounds like a vacuum canister that controls the switching is not operating
