HECTOR WHAT IS THE DIFFRENCE WITH BANK 1 AND BANK 2 I HEARD THAT BANK 1 IS ON THE PASSAGER SIDE AND BANK 2 IS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE IS THIS TRUE

  • Hector L. Morales Mar 15, 2012

Bank 1 has # 1 3 5 cilinders bank 2 has number 2 4 6 cilinders. So if you follow the wires from the coil and look at the numbers on the wires or coil it will point you right to the respective banks. Also if you look at the cylinder heads you'll notice one sticks out more than the other that bank one. This is a transverse mounted engine which means this engine is side ways. One bank in front the other to the firewall.

Bank #1 referes to the bank with number 1 spark plug follow wire from coil (the numbers are on the coil) if you have any doubts. Sensor #1 would be the one before the catalytic converter on bank #1 and sensor #2 is the one after the catalytic converter closest to rear of vehicle.

Not a problem glad to help.

  • Hector L. Morales Mar 15, 2012

No, I said the one after the catalytic converter and added so that there is no confusion the one closest to the rear of the vehicle. Identify bank #1 and follow the exhaust you will see sensor one then the catalyst then sensor two.

Oxygen sensors are always numbered like this:
Bank 1 sensor 1
Bank 2 sensor 1
Bank 1 sensor 2
Bank 2 sensor 2

Some manufacturers use a kind of shorthand that reads different, but means the same thing:
Sensor 1/1 or O2s 1/1
Sensor 2/1 or O2s 2/1
Sensor 1/2 or O2s 1/2
Sensor 2/2 or O2s 2/2

Bank 1 is always the side of the engine where cylinder number 1 is located and, of coarse, Bank 2 is the opposite side.
On a 4 cylinder engine, there is only 1 bank and it is always referred to as Bank 1.

Sensor 1 is always the upstream sensor (the one located BEFORE the catalytic converter)
Sensor 2 is always the downstream sensor (the one that is located AFTER the catalytic converter.

This is Bank 1 (closer to the dash panel) Sensor 2 (located after the catalytic converter).

Note: A malfunctioning front oxygen sensor may cause fuel trim codes to set.
  1. Several Diagnostic Trouble Codes use specific terminology to refer to sensor location. The illustration and key below explain the following terms:
  2. Engine BANK Bank 1 is closer to the dash panel, (also referred to as RH or right hand). Bank 2 is closer to the radiator, (also referred to as LH or left hand).
  3. UP Refers to Sensor 1 or "front sensor". It is located closer to the exhaust manifold and before the catalytic converter.
  4. DOWN Refers to Sensor 2 or "rear sensor." It is located after the catalytic converter.
  5. The following examples show how to interpret oxygen sensor terminology:
  6. B1/S1 = Bank 1/Sensor 1 = Dash panel side, BEFORE the catalyst or "upstream"
  7. B2/S2 = Bank 2/Sensor 2 = Radiator side, AFTER the catalyst or "downstream"

Where is the bank 2 sensor 1 located.

Sensor 1/1 or O2s 1/1

Sensor 1/2 or O2s 1/2

Most GM engines have #1 cylinder located on the left bank, (or Driver's Side) of the engine,

So, the answer to your question would be that you are looking for the sensor located before the catalytic converter on the right (or Passenger Side) of the truck.

2005 gallant with O2 sensor engine light is one...how do I fix it?

have the engine light code scanned, and it'll tell you if it's bank 1 sensor 1, bank 1 sensor 2, bank 2 sensor 1, bank 2 sensor 4.

Bank 1 is on the same side as Cylinder 1
Bank 2 is on the opposite side of Cylinder 1

Sensor 1 is located before the catalytic converter.
Sensor 2 is located after the catalytic converter
