First check your owners manual and see if there is a fuse, most likely it is good but test it anyway, next check to make sure the connector to the instrument cluster is tight and has no loose connectors, if all that checks ok then you will need to send these parts in for repair by a VW authorized electronic component repair shop, the dealer can do this for you or you can do it as well, about 1/2 the cost if you do the work. claims they have factory repair manuals, they have nothing of the sort, this is not to say some experts may have manuals, we do, but we work from home and in most cases have a small library. Experts are not employed by, we help free of charge as much as we can with the general automotive knowledge we have learned while working as auto technicians, specific test values, repair procedures and illustrations are unique to each car line, these are not in most cases available to us. Thanks for using FixYa!

Tachometer not working fuses good ware dose tachometer get its siginal

From the ECM - engine computer ! Suggest you take this to a ASE certified repair shop or the Chevy dealer an have it diagnosed ! Could be the gauge itself .Looking at fuse's is no good ,there is not a fuse just for the Tachometer .
The engine control module (ECM) creates the engine speed signal. The engine speed is sent to the IPC over a discreet wire from the ECM. The instrument panel cluster (IPC) converts the signal to a tachometer position indicating the engine speed.

How do you hook up tachometer to adjust idle speed

Use a optical tachometer on RPM. Mark the camshaft with white paint or a optical sticker and shine the meter on the mark. Or connect a CT clamp to one on the spark plug leads and take the reading.

The gears on my car are not changing, could it be the transmision or the airflow meter?

first learn now to tell, if the engine lacks power ,or the tranny is slipping
that is easy.
1: increase speed, does RPM(tachometer) rise faster (independant) of road speed. (that is called, trans slip.)
2: the trans dont slip. so the engine rpms stay low (gears work) and
the engine has no power.
if the engine has no power, fix engine.

The trans is very complex. if it messes up post that and what it does
under all driving and gear selecton modes, and hills and flat ground.
why pick the air flow meter, MAF , the most expensive part of EFI sensors. why guess there is a very simple test for the MAF, just ask.
its all in the FSM or here.

While driving my tachometer doesnt go straight to 0 when i stop. It stays around 3/4 close to 1. Is this a concern? 2001 acura cl type s

Hi Eveerei, If you're asking about the tachometer and not the speedo meter, that meter records the engine RPM speed and not the vehicle ground speed The tachometer at idle (when you stop at a traffic light, stop street or any other stop) should record an engine speed of about seven hundred to seven fifty revolutions per minute, at idle. It will increase in relationship to how hard you push your foot on the accelerator pedal. Hope this info helps you. Happy new year and regards John

My RPM meter is not's always on 0.

I used to have a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse with the same symptoms; my mechanic replaced the speed sensor ($65) and the problem went away. Take the car to auto zone and ask them to plug the computer, they normally do it free of charge. If it is the sensor, you may have to buy at the dealer.

The speed and rpm meters quit working. Is this possibly a fuse? or maybe a sensor? or maybe a cable?

{: ) A cable is definitely not the problem because there is none. There is no particular fuse for both meters. In case the cluster fuses go bad, there will be other more indicators or gauges that won't be functioning aside from the two meters, and you can also observe that. To verify if the two gauges are inoperative or stuck, you will need service of diagnostic scan tool.
The speedometer and rpm meter are electrically integrated into the IPC (nstrument panel cluster)module. The IPC gather its information from other modules like the PCM or BCM and they communicate thru serial data lines, similar to a telephone network hooked up to only two wires.
For both meters, the IPC communicates with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), which receives the signals coming from the vehicle speed sensor (for the speedometer) and the engine speed sensor (for the rpm meter or tachometer).
The two sensors could not have failed at the same time, although not impossible. A module (PCM) or communication (wirings and connectors) failure is a more likely cause. Just make sure that all the fuses are checked good to rule out any missing power signal during the initial diagnosis.
