emissionwiz I also put a new thermostat in befor all else but i dont think i tighten it down proper because its leaking on the backside where the water drips. could this be part of the problem?

My 98 ran like yours when cold since I bought it over a year ago. On the way home from work (after buying gas) it started missing and jerking when I hit 40 mph or higher. I'm changing everything out like you. If your converter is getting so hot that it is red, then something is wrong. I looked for that but mine wasn't. I'm taking it to the garage today.. I hope it isn't the head gasket. I hadn't thought of that. I pray that isn't it but with my luck... Was that your problem?

Most head gaskets don't get in the oil, just leak into the combustion chamber, your friend is probably right, have another shop confirm his diagnosis

Yes, did you break that housing? air could be getting into the system.

I have a 30ltr TDI quattro that smokes when it idles for than a few minutes

This car doesn't have coils and wires, it's gasoil. The most likely reason is the piezo injectors are worn. The best way to test is with VCDS
After an overnight stationary period drive the vehicle with cold engine between 1200 - 1600 rpm till the complaint occurs. Constantly read the measured value block 13 and 14 for the smooth running control in the engine control unit. The values of one or several cylinders should noticeably move to positive.

modified injectors A8: with 3.0l, 4.2l TDI from: WAUZZZ4E*7N016685
Replace the injector with the highest deviation and all injectors produced between 1.3.2006 and 30.4.2006.
Example of production date: 060304 stands for 4.3.2006
vcds go to address 01 measured values below
013 Smooth running control1)Cyl. 1 Injection quantity variation[mg/stroke]2)Cyl. 2 Injection quantity variation[mg/stroke]3)Cyl. 3 Injection quantity variation[mg/stroke]4) VacantPermissible values at idle: +- 2,99 mg/strokeA If the permissible tolerance is exceededfirst check injector IQA-IVA adaption values
014 Smooth running control1)Cyl. 4 Injection quantity variation[mg/stroke]2)Cyl. 5 Injection quantity variation[mg/stroke]3)Cyl. 6 Injection quantity variation[mg/stroke]4) VacantPermissible values at idle: +- 2,99 mg/strokeA If the permissible tolerance is exceededfirst check injector IQA-IVA adaption values

My 1998 Ford Explorer runs rough under hard acceleration

New plugs and wires?

Double check to make sure that you've got the routing and firing order right... if you have 2 switched, the car may still idle well but then pop and sputter on harder acceleration.

The next step would be to run some "Complete Fuel System Cleaner"... If that's the problem, you should see results within 20 miles or so.

no problem. If you are getting that low of voltage on a load then you might want to test the alternator as well to make sure it is running at capacity.

I have a 1998 Ford Ranger that when I start it up runs a little rough for about 2 minutes then has a good smooth idle. When I step on the gas there is no power like it wants to stall. It only goes to a...

A possibility:

I have a 1998 Mazda B2500 (same truck/engine/trans). A few years back, I was getting a rough idle a few minutes after startup, and my tachometer would fluctuate wildly. This progressed to the point where I was stalling out randomly while driving. With the help of my local mechanic, I ended up diagnosing it as a mass airflow sensor error. My best guess is that oil or water had gotten into the intake. Whatever the cause, after replacing the sensor (saw them for $60 on eBay, right after I paid $300), it's been running smoothly since.

P.S. -- I don't think this is a mileage/wear and tear issue so much as it is bad luck. I only had 13k miles on the truck at the time.

Smell of fuel

what do you mean by "as if the idle is too low",  does the car start normally but then idle at less than 750 rpms? or idle rough? If either of these is the case it could be bad gas, fuel injectors or fuel pump. As far as the odor, do you every see any fluid if you look under the car? A punctured fuel line would be rare but would fit all your symptoms. hope this helps :)
