Hello!

Is it that only 1 light goes on? Or is the problem effecting both backup lights?

If it is only 1 light with the problem, you probably just need to replace the bulb with a new one. But if it is both lights then you may need a fuse or some other troubleshooting methods.

Check out whether both bulbs are out, if not, post back for further assistance.

Best regards,
EJ Kudelka

Where is the reverse light switch on a 97 hyundai excel

Typically, reverse light switches are located under the dashboard. They work like a refrigerator light switch that is pushed in when the door is closed and as soon as the button is allowed to come out the light comes on.
In a car, the same kind of switch is operated by the upper end of the brake pedal arm up under the dashboard.
Check your fuses also. They're more likely to go than the switch.

On a 1999 hyundai excel is the rear fog light on a seperate fuse?

could you be talking about the backup lights? I have never seen rear fog lights on a car and I have had a bunch of them. With help, set the emergence brake and have someone start the car and place the shift in to reverse, be sure you are not standing right behind the car. see if the lights you are talking about light then. Remember have the person put thier foot on the brake while dooing this.

Hyundai excel 1996 automatic will engage reverse and park but no forward gears. Gearbox was overhauled 3 years ago, new seals etc. Oil level in the main transmission is ok and no apparent leaks. Problem...

It appears you have a Forward Clutch FAILURE. Replace the trans after you get it diagnosed and verified by a professional technician. By the way, do you have a Check Engine light? If so, what is the diagnostic code? The dealership can scan the system and find any codes which may have been stored in the TCM (Transmission Control Module). If there were any 'Incorrect Gear Ratio" codes, it's most probably the trans itself.
