You have to give more information about your observations on how it rotates. does it fires but not start?
Does it start but fires irregularly?

Check your fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs,(there have been substandard plugs proliferating in the market today). temp?, oil?

Check to make sure you have correct fuel pressure, also do a leak down test on the fuel pump, after shuting engine off the pump should not loose more than 5 PSI after key is turned off, you will need to borrow or buy a fuel injection pressure test guage for this, it hooks up on a test port on the metal line that feeds gas to the injectors this tool costs about $20 from Kragen auto or a store like it.

Timing belt re-install and engine hard stops when rotating by hand even when timing marks lined up.

That hard stop is the valves hitting the head of the piston, you most likely have bent a valve, you have the valve timing wrong.

Cam shaft timing causing engine to jam when rotating by hand

is it a twin cam ..what size engine.the timing marks maybe 180 out ...do not use the starter to turn the engine over ,use a rachet or a wrench .if you used the starter already to turn the engine you more than likely bent the valves already,if its a interference engine

How to set the timing on mazda mx-3 1993

first you need to remove the timing belt cover and locate the timing marks both on the camshaft timing gear and crankshaft pulley and see if the timing mark synchronzed together while manually rotating the crankshaft pulley with a wrench or socket wrench and see if its rotates freely and if it gets really hard to rotate then you got the timing wrongfully set as it would do damage to your engine when you crank it up

I can't find the timing marks, at least not sure enough to start turning the distributor

This should NOT be that hard. Remove the number 1 spark plug. Slowly bump the starter until the number 1 piston is at the top of its compression stroke. If you remove the coil wire so that it cannot start, then you should be able to have someone crank the engine while you attempt to feel the air coming out of the spark plug hole during the compression stroke. Once you are real close to the top of the compression stroke, then you set the distributer to just close at No. 1 piston position.
BTW, you should mark the distributor base with the location of the spark plug wire for the No.1 piston plug wire before doing this. The you just rotate the distributor until the points close while the rotor is pointing to that No. 1 wire mark. This becomes your "home position"
Now. install the cap, install the spark plug and wire. Snug the retainer a bit on the distributor. You should now be able to have a helper try to start the engine while you (very) gradually rotate the distributor a bit in each direction until the engine fires. The total rotation should not exceed 1/2 inch either side of the home position. Typically you will be going for an advance - so counter clockwise from the "home position" will likely get you started. Once it starts, you should see the alignment of the timing mark.

Does the engine rotate at all when trying to start, or won't rotate at all? Clicking sound?
Blown fuse somewhere?
hope this works or clarify some more.

each gear has a mark on it from the factory that line up with a corrrsponding mark on the engine some times they are hard to find but if you look hard enough you will find them they all must line up there is no margin for error or it will not start like now good luck Lindz

Hard to start / engine rotates but wont start

check fuel pressure with a gauge, turn the key in the on position an read pressure ,if pressure goes lets say to 40 or 50 on one key cycle pump is prob. good . if it takes 3 to 4 key cycles to achieve this pressure ,pump is bad or connection in tank is bleeding off over night.

If the pump is not rotating all the time then it's due for replacement. They are not supposed to stop while engine is running. 227K miles is a lot of miles for any engine component.
