The check engine light came on two days before the trouble began it drove fine. than started up for work and it idled fine when i excelerated to leave it started to sputter and die as if it were out of gas i changed the gas filter and noticed no pressure during the change so i thought it might be fuel pump but i would like to be sure because i don"t the cash to throw at it until i get to the actual problem as i have in the past
This could be caused by many different things. Do some research before you throw more parts at the problem. Try to extract the diagnostic code first. An engine needs 3 things to run: spark, fuel, and air. Your problem could arise from any of the 3 sources. Things to check include intake vacuum, ignition timing, fuel pressure to start. More information is needed to diagnose the symptoms you describe.
SOURCE: idles fine then dies when put in drive or reverse
You may have a problem with idle speed control motor or ETC as GM calles it. here is a photo and a price from rockauto.com.

SOURCE: starting car whie hot, will not crank over unless gas is pumped
Hi. You need to check the fuel pressure to really eliminate the pump. It could be running but not producing sufficient continuous pressure. A drop of only a few psi may enough to prevent starting or smooth running. Once you're sure you have enough fuel delivery and you've already done basic ignition, then you can move on to the fun stuff!!!
SOURCE: My truck wont start, ran fine, but then would not
the fuel pump maybe working but is it pumping the right fuel pressure? it could be that its working but not good enough to keep the truck running! have it pressure tested !
SOURCE: car has new plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor,
My 1992 Cadillac Eldorado is idle up and cuts off
SOURCE: what would cause the car to run fine at idle but
it sounds like the mass air flow metering sensor thats in the air intake pipe ,but any more than that iam at a loss as none of these cars here in spain so i cannot tell you exactly where to look
