Won't idle when hot

Occasionally when it is hot the engine will not idle. After driving with two feet for a short time the engine will idle.

When this occurs I keep one foot on the gas to keep the engine running and use my left foot on the brake. After a few minutes of driving this way the engine will start idling. It seems that this is temperature related. It never occurs when I bring it to the shop so they can never figure out what is happening.

Sorry about that. I thought I selected helpful last time. I intend to have this part looked at but have not had a chance yet.

You may have a idle speed control valve issue, this part will set no code, just cause stalling, it is bolted to the side of the throttle body, not very expensive as parts go, you might want to replace it.

Since you just replaced the thermostat and it still over heats there is a good chance you have air in your cooling system. You can find step buy step instructions on my tip and how to page. Feel free to take a look.

91 XJ6 Stalls occasionally in Drive with brake depressed

Idle valve? If stuck in hot position (they often do), then not enough air when engine is cold. Symptom would be that it does this more when cold. The brake pedal thing gets me a bit, does it do it when the handbrake is pulled on but in Drive? If so, nothing to do with brakes, but just that there is a load on the engine caused by halting the torque converter creep, which goes back to idle control problem. If it is only with the foot brake, then I would suspect vacuum leak, there is a whole host of vacuum circuits on your Jaguar, have a look for hoses that have rubbed on the engine and have a slight hole or ones that have perished. Pressing the brake causes a reduction in vacuum to all the circuits, but if there is an air leak, then this can cause the inlet manifold vacuum to collapse and the engine to stall.

sounds like the idle control valve is sticking. it is located at the throttlebody at the air inlet. try tapping on it and see if the idle goes up

2002 highlander vehicle shut off

I am having the same problem with a 2002 Highlander, V6. I have read in other posts that the Idle Control valve may be to blame. I took out the throttle body and cleaned it out thoroughly. Solved some of the problem but it will occasionally be difficult to start when cold and I drive a short trip. I plan on replacing the idle control valve in the near future. I found a temporary fix is to turn on the car and keep the idle up near 2000 rpm for about a minute (allows engine to circulate oil) and then rev up the engine to about 5000 rpm a few seconds at a time. I am then able to drive off with minimal problems.
