I have a 1992 toyota tercel. lately it won't idle. it starts and runs with your foot on the gas a little. but when running smell like it is running rich. and my gas mileage has gone way down
Problem sounds like IAC (idle air control) or EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) Is there a check engine (MIL) light on with rhe issue. I just replaced an EGR valve on a camry this weekend with the same issue.

While the engine is cold, try starting it and giving a little gas while you start it. If it starts, release your foot and see if it keeps running. If it stalls out, start it again (by giving a little gas again) and then keep your foot on the gas slightly to keep it from going to it's normal idle. Once the engine is warmed up, let off the gas and see if it stays running again. If it does then you need to clean/reaplace the IAC valve that is on the throttle body.
If you can, remove it and clean it out with carb cleaner (like B-12) and an old toothbrush. It could save you some money from having to replace it.
Sounds like you may have a bad motor mount. While driving and under a torque situation you wont notice it as much, but at idle you will as it has extra room to move.
If it tends to cut off when no gas given but sometimes idles up very fast & then slows back down, probably the idle air control valve. If so, will have to be replaced to fix.
Idle air control valve or a vacuum leak, the idle air control valve controls the amount of air let into your engine when you start or while running you holding your foot on the gas lets more air in.
I think maybe that you have a plugged catylitic converter. When cats get plugged they get hot, very hot. If there is anything onit ie. dirt, road oil, anything at all, it will burn it off. The best thing I can suggest is loosen the bolts upstream of the cat and remove the dougnut gasket. replace the bolts and drive the car. if it runs better then replace the cat. It will be loud, but we just want to look at power and idle.
engine running rich, gas smell
