thanks for your response--may i ask you another question? we have sprayed starting fluid in the breather -it still will not crank .would that also be in the fuel pump? we was thinking it might crank by spraying the starting fluid in the breather.

These trucks are noturious for fuel pump failure. The symtom you are discribing would make sense for this issue especially if it seems to be cranking quickly.

Try this first. Have someone preferably with good hearing crouch low near fuel tank while someone else turns the key to the 2nd position. This will actuate the fuel pump you will hear it if its working (they are inherinently noisy). If you don't here the noise kinda sounds like a fish tank pump stop there its the pump. If you do here it hit me back. The issue sounds electrical in nature. Starting fluid on a fuel injected vehicle doesnt always work

I would suspect the crank position sensor at this point. I've included a description of this component. It seems to fit the symtoms as they have unfolded.

The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is located in the front engine cover and is perpendicular to the crankshaft target wheel. The air gap between the sensor and the wheel is preset and not adjustable. The target wheel has four slots 60 degrees apart and is keyed to the crankshaft. As the target wheel rotates, the slots passing by the sensor create a change in the magnetic field of the sensor which results in an induced voltage pulse. One revolution of the crankshaft results in four pulses (4x signal). Based on these pulses, the VCM is able to determine crankshaft position and engine speed. The VCM then activates the fuel injector and provides a spark to the distributor The relation between the CKP sensor and the target wheel is crucial. The sensor must be exactly perpendicular to the target wheel with the correct air gap.

Yes you can replace it but I would recommend having the codes checked with even a simple hand scanner first. They can be very helpful and are available at the parts store or online for 99.00 to 350.00 dollars. It has the potential to save you a lot of money in diagnostic.

sounds like the timing is off. check the firing order to be sure your plug wires are on the correct positions on the coil packs. if that checks out, possibly a timing chain may need replaced. i hope this helps

Thee new fuels today go bad after around 3 weeks because of the ethonol content. Put a can of Sea Foam in the gas tank see if that helps clean it out. Best bet is to drain the tank put new fuel in it with a can of Sea Foam, then give it a good long run until the tank is empty. Re fill the tank and put the correct amount of Stabil in the with the gas, this will stop the gas from turning into sugar and it works for years.
Good luck

Engine shuts off going down the road

We had a similar problem and it was the connector that connects the ignition module (bottom of coil packs to the wiring harness. The technician spread the socket connectors and it solved the issue.

these vehicles overheat real fast when u noticed the water pump leak yu should have replaced it now i think that you have over heated the head and the heads have to be removed , check for cracks and most probably you will end up doing a valve job and replacement of the head gasket, water pump and the timing belt. sorry not very cheap at all
