If your check engine light is flashing it means there is damage being done to your catalytic converter which is BAD. if your car is misfiring that bad i suggest you check spark to all your cylinders and make sure your timing is correct

You must have a fault code test run first, that is the start point on all modern systems of engine control.

Truck starts but only chuggs and blows out black gas smoke as engine lite flashes no throttle response

black smoke is too much fuel
check for leaking injector and injector seals
check for excessive fuel pressure
run the fault codes as you will have some from the engine light on

STARTING PROBLEM, WONT IDLE,BLACK SMOKE, ONCE STARTED IT SOUNDS ROGUTH

This problem is a bit more difficult to diagnose because half of your symptoms rule out half of the solutions. I would think the ISC control could be dirty or not working or your fuel injectors are sticking open.

With black exhaust smoke you are running rich. Often the "Cold start sequence" is at fault for poor starts making the engine too lean when the sequence fails. An intake air leak can cause the engine to run Rich, causing the black smoke, rough idle, rough running conditions. This is still a possibility, but the on-board computer usually sets a Code saying you are running "Lean" and then enriches the fuel ratio and floods the engine by itself.

Now the fuel injectors can cause several of your problems. For start-up problems, the remaining fuel pressure can dump fuel into the engine as the car sits because the injectors are sticking open. Someone would need to perform a fuel pressure bleed-down test to see if you have this problem.

Another way to verify this problem is to capture the oil during an oil change and smell it for gasoline fumes. The dilution of the oil will destroy the engine. If the injectors are found to be the problem, a new oil filter and change are needed.

Rough low idle and black smoke

Bad carb or fuel injection issues- the system is fuel rich (black smoke) and also fuel rich system can make the idle low. Many things can cause this but thses are just a few.

1997 Volvo 960 6 cyl - Started running rough when I got on the freeway. Up until then it had been great. Very Smooth. I have a check engine light that is flashing. The car idles rough up to about 1900...

Check wiring harness to fuel injectors where it runs through intake manifold - these chafe through and cause injectors to stay on or off. Also check engine grounds. 2 at back of head near firewall and one at drivers side engine mount (almost impossible to see)

I bought a second car for utility use; B6000, 1994, p/u, standard trans. Only when starting and running when the engine is cold, it runs very rough and difficult to idle. At normal operating temperatures...

a coolant tempurature sensor will make it run to rich if it is bad. run rough at idle, and produce black smoke, engine may stall out. it also causes retarded timing, slow idle speed, cold hesitation or stumble, poor fuel milage. good-luck!! if light is on check for problem code. this will guide you in the right direction. if no scanner, any auto parts store will scan for free. repost if need be. have a good day!!

2000 Subaru Impreza idling and accelerating poorly, burning smell

Try getting the fuel injectors cleaned. clean the mass air flow sensor .
------------------- also
is typically caused by insufficient lubrication to the camshaft synchronizer, which is the short drive assembly installed where earlier engines had a distributor. Once they begin to squeak, the bushing is shot, and the synchronizer must be rebuilt or replaced. They are available new, new aftermarket, and remanufactured. In extreme cases, looseness of the worn shaft will allow the rotating cam to destroy the cam sensor, which at a minimum will activate the "check engine" light and degrade engine performance, but more likely will result in failure of the engine to run. ---------------- also ---
What color is the smoke? Black - running rich. Bluish - buring oil. White - burning coolant.

Exhaust smoke at start up

It means that the system is running rich, in other words too much fuel.

Try checking your air filter--make sure it is not dirty. Also check for a plugged air intake hose. Enough air is not getting into your cylinders for the proper air-fuel ratio.

If it has carb, the carb float is too high or sunk.
