Would like to talk with a car repair guru, not a computer guru

2002 Chevy Trailblazer LTZ, 6 cylinder, 4 wheel drive. At 60mph, and not before that speed, truck starts running jerkily and heat gauge shows increase of heat in engine. When decline accelerations, the jerking stops and the heat gauge starts going back to normal heat. This happens whether the engine is hot or cold.

This problem is because the timing is bad, for this the engine get it hot when the revolutions are fast more dis timing more hot,one probability is the sensor of that synchronize the spark delivery wrong voltage, another possibility is the timing chain jump one sprocket for this reason the dis synchronization between spark, valves and all components related with the time this the computer don't display code when this occurred.

I quote from your question "truck starts running jerkily and heat gauge shows increase of heat in engine"

"truck starts running jerkily" can be caused by many factors, as suggested, it can be a distribution or a fuel problem.

What is really worrying is that when you press the accelerator pedal, your temperature gauge "shows increase of heat in engine"

Check water level and oil level.

If water level is down, that means that the car is vapourizing water inside the cylinder, and the car will die soon with no warning.

If oil level is down and there is an oil leak, check if spark plugs are dirty with burnt oil, that may mean that there is a problem with piston rings, and the engine misfires and burn oil while slowly getting to the end of its days.

If you feel that the engine is not responding do not insist in pushing down the accelerator pedal all the way through, this can damage the engine further.

Finally, as already suggested, it can also be an electronic distribution or fuelling problem, concerning sensors and computer module.
In that case you go to a garage and ask for a computer scan.
Only in that case is unusual that the temperature gauge goes up that fast

I suggest asking to a trusted mechanic a general inspection, as this does not sound like a small problem

You also told me that someone suggested that problem is related to exhaust system or transmission. I would exclude exhaust, exhaust problems does not cause this.
Regarding transmission, only if it is automatic, but in this case you should feel that the car engaging a low gear while on speed. In any case it is rather uncommon.

Sure exaust back pressure can cause the jerking, I still do not understand how this can cause engine temperature suddenly going up.

I think you have a combonation of problems here. most of it lead to needing a tune up .
just to get an understanding what is going on in your engine . i would bet to say that your enagine light is on . and probily an engine misfire code.
when the engine misfires somtimes it wil activate your knock sensor and ****** the timing thus raising your engine temp. if you havent flushed your coolant system yet you should. new plugs and wires and clean your throttle body.
good luck

somthing i didnt hit on was to have your exaust back pressure checked if your cat is plugging it could cause the same problem. but get it checked dont just replace it.

these answere are not cut and dried . we do many tests to finaly find the problems .

Service four wheel drive light on,cant shift into 4wd cold only ,below 45F,drive awahile resatrt the truck it works fine, warm days no problems .

Vehicles: 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer 4WD 4.2L SFI DOHC 6-cylinder

Your front 4WD Transfer case is low on Gear Oil.
On warm days, the Gear Oil expands slightly, and is less viscous, so the "Service 4WD" light stays off. On colder days/mornings the story changes.

The following paragraph has info applying to the manual differential only:
The 2002 Trailblazer (the first year Chevy made the Trailblazer) has a Front Differential using 1.11 (that's 1 and 1/9th) Quarts Gear Oil, and a Rear Differential with a capacity of 2.29 (thats 2 and 2/7ths) Quarts Gear Oil.
The Gear Oil needed is GM Part No.12345349 or GM Part No.1052931 (they're identical), also known as "GM Synchromesh"(R), which is a type of GLS (Gear Lubricant, Special), also known as "Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid 5W30". A synthetic version of which sells for $12.70/qt (USD) at
http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/mtf.aspx

This is not to be confused with 5W30 motor oil (which can be had for $3.00/qt (USD)).

The 2002 Trailblazer 4WD Transfer Case (NV126 Transfer Case) capacity is 0.8 Liters of GM Part No.12378508 (US), also known as "GM Auto Trak II"(R).
Note that one Quart (US) = 0.946 Liter, so 0.8 Liter = 27.06 ounces.

Red Line sells something that they say replaces both GM Synchromesh and GM Auto-Trak II for $12.14/Qt and $44.55/Gal (US) at
http://www.shopwiki.com/Red-Line-MTL-70W80-GL~4-Gear-Oil-%281-Quart%29

13 Manufacturer Recalls apply to the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer (model year 2002 was the first year Chevy offered the Trailblazer), and two recalls pertain to the 4WD Transfer Case. Note that one of the recalls applies to only 895 units, so your vehicle is unlikely to be affected by this Transfer Case recall.

Recall Summary
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES (4 WHEEL-DRIVE). SOME OF THESE VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH A RANGE SHIFT COLLAR IN THE TRANSMISSION TRANSFER CASE THAT CONTAINS CRACKS.

Consequence
THIS CONDITION COULD RESULT IN A COMPLETE FRACTURE OF THE RANGE SHIFT COLLAR AND SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF VEHICLE FORWARD AND REVERSE GEARS, AND THE INABILITY TO MAINTAIN "PARK" POSITION. THIS INCREASES THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH RESULTING FROM UNINTENDED MOVEMENT OF A PARKED VEHICLE.

I have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer LTZ, Might be a trans problem....

Have it scanned and see if there isn't a trans code. If it is spinning out between gears that is called slippage. There is not much you can do since there are no adjustments. The only thing that it could be other than the trans itself is a problem with the TPS, Throttle Position Sensor, and if that is defective and you don't repair it right away you can do serious damage to the trans. (almost 30 years rebuilding trans and 4 of them directly for GM. I know the 4l60e extremely well) Do not drive this if it is slipping. Hope this helps.

Truck starts jerking at 60mph

Its not the catalytic convertor its not the transmission and i dont believe you need a new engine. It does sound like the engine is getting hot though Have you had a TK head test done as head gasket is a possibility. The head does play a major part in the combustion process.but would not require a complete engine if its faulty as heads are easier and cheaper to repair than an engine would be.Its dificult to give you a definitive answer without the vehicle in front of me and a number of tests to determine the true cause. Are you able to remove the spark plugs to see if therse any indication of trouble, all the plugs should be the same color and not too different in any way.If one plug is noticably different then its likely that cylinder is having problems and will isolate which cylinder is giving you trouble. The fact that you can smell the engine usualy means its getting too hot for some reason wether its blocked radiator, faulty thermostat, fan not working or no water left in the radiator. Not sure with your model but some vehicles had the ability to shut itself down to protect itself if over heating occured.
