how would this solve the headlight problem

  • csolis80 Nov 03, 2008

we were unable to locate any fuses under the hood of the car by the engine. i have been told that there should be fuses under the hood but can not find...the only fuses we have been able to find are in the inside of the car on the side panel by the steering wheel.should all cars have a fuse box under the hood?

I had the lights on my dash and tail lights go out on my 1995 Grand Am (headlights, turn signals, brake lights still worked). After much investigation, it ended up being that the turn signal switch had gone bad. I got mine at Autozone - $79.99 for one with cruise, $69.99 for one without. SW860 for the non-cruise, SW859 for the cruise version. It is sometimes referred to as a multifunction switch - however, when I called and asked about that, it seemed as though the parts are NOT the same (MFS was much more expensive). Make sure you specify turn signal switch (that also controls the tail lights, headlights, etc).

In order to replace it, you need to remove the cover around the steering column - we couldn't get the lower part of the cover off and subsequently also had to pull the steering wheel (which also meant disabling the air bag), then remove the bad turn signal switch (which also controls the headlights, parking lights, tail lights, etc), pop in a new one, put everything back together (re-enabling the airbag) and then you can enjoy a life of dash lights and tail lights once again.

Well actualy no all cars have a fuse box in the engine area,in that case check all fuses related to lightning if no problem found try checking the light switch it might be the problem because all three light groups (head, tail and dash)are affected;if still no solution visit an electromecanic or check with a GM service advisor.g'luck!

If you already check the dimmer definetly you will have to remove the dashboard area where the indicator is and replace those light bulbs they are tiny so careful and first check your auto parts store for correct number.luck!

The dimmer switch for the headlights only affect the headlights. The dimmer control for the dash lights only affect the dash lights.
So if the parking lights are going off too, I would say its the headlight switch. Thats about the only thing that involves all three circuits.
It could also be the harness plug at the headlight switch.
BTW - the turn signal lights are another circuit from the parking lights.

I'd be willing to bet your dash lights don't work either when you turn the headlight on.change the headlight switch, it has a short, it's only about 11 dollars at advance auto, and is fairly easy to replace. my 93 chevy did same thing, changed headlight switch, problem solved

When my headlights are on, my dashboard lights dont work

check dimmer for dash lights... and toyota kills dashlights if the taillight fuse is blown. so check taillights. sometimes the trailer connector will short out. :) good luck.

Tail lights won't come on. All other lights work, dashboard switch replaced.

I recommend checking your dimmer switch. A bad switch will cause tail lights not to work. As long as bulbs are good and headlight switch is working and wires are securely in place, then the dimmer switch or fuse is bad.

Problems with dashboard lights

The switch that you are talking about... the dimmer switch, must not be working. If you have warranty left, i suggest you take it in. If not, maybe find a good auto wrecker, and replace the switch yourself. I'm guessing they'll be expensive.

Turn on your headlights and check to see if your taillights are working. They act as a fuse to your dashlights, its a safety thing
