Question about 2004 Ford Taurus
The shifter just feels loose and will just slide from gear to gear but will not engage. It has not been giving me any problems before this.
It sounds like the linkage or cable that links the gearshift to the transmission has become detached. If you are practically minded you could remove the centre console and check that it is still connected at the lever, but first I would check under the car and see if it is still attached to the trans. If it is a cable style, most are these days, get someone to sit in the car and move the lever back and forth, this should show you if the cable is intact, disconnected or broken.
Hope this helps,
