The first step is to get codes from the computer. When the computer locates a problem it will store a code or codes , letting you know where the problem is and with some testing the problem can be found.
Depending on what the problem is the computer will select limp mode so you are able to get home or to a shop with out causing more damage to other parts of the system.
You will need to go to a shop or a parts store. most auto part stores will scan the computer and give you a print out of the codes. If you get me the codes i will help you in finding the problem.
Good day.

1999 Jeep Cherokee. The transmission will not shift past second gear. It is stuck in Limp Mode?

Yes, that is the whole idea of Limp Mode. It limits you to first and second gear so you can limp slowly to the nearest garage without causing catastrophic damage to the engine. What you need to do is connect a good quality DTC code reader scan tool and see the real reason that Limp Mode has been engaged.

It means the computer noticed something wrong or lost contact with an important sensor that could ruin the engine or transmission and has de-rated the power so you can get home without the car stopping or damaging itself. Why does benz c200 fail to accelerate

Need to be more specific of what happened?
Is there total loss of accelerator?
If there is limited and feels like no boost atall, then your car is gone into limp mode,
This can be caused from a number af reasons.
Usually a faulty sensor creating a fault in the system.
Best get the codes read on it.

1990 chrysler new yorker will not shift into overdriver

You may have to have your ******/computer ran for any codes to give you a better idea of why it is limp mode. There are many causes of limp mode. A sensor or solenoid or bad wire will send the computer into limp mode. The TPS and map sensor both can affect limp mode

What is limp mode?

Hi, limp mode or (limp-in mode or limp-home mode)occurs when your computer in your car is not communicating with the sensors on your engine. On some cars(volkswagon Passat for example) If you disconnect the battery then the computer will lose all of the settings and will go into limp-in mode.
The car will have little power and a top speed of only about 30 miles per hour.
The function of limp-in mode is to get you to a place that can repair the car but the car is barely drivable.

2002 Impala: transmission limp mode...

Most transmissions have a limp mode, or limp-home mode.
If the driveline computer thinks there is something wrong, it can lock the transmission into one gear, such as 2nd gear. Usually reverse will also be available. The Impala automatic has 4 speeds. 2nd speed or gear will get you home, but the engine rpms can get a little high. I wouldn't get on the expressway will in limp mode.
Before taking to the shop, you might want to try and reset limp mode by turning the car off for a couple minutes, or you may have to disconnect and reconnect the battery.
