97 gmc pickup with automatic transmission trouble

I had a sudden **** in starting out from a full stop and now the truck won't go into reverse and it has a hard time shifting from 1st into second gear. This is an automatic transmission once it gets past the first gear change it acts fine. Fluid level is fine with no leaks.

1st thing to do is test the system for codes, the problem is most likely a failed or stuck shift solenoid indside the trans, have you ever serviced the trans, sometimes a fluid and filter cahnge will cure these kinds of issues.

Pickup starts great, goes into all gears but won't move. It's like it is still in nutural.

Assuming the pickup is an automatic, check the transmission fluid. The #1 cause for transmission slippage is lack of Automatic Transmission Fluid.

If the pickup is a standard shift, the pin that connects the shift to the transmission has likely broken. You would still be able to shift from the inside but the gears won't engage. A bad clutch is also a possibility but you would have noticed a burning smell prior to the clutch giving out.

HAVING TRANSMISSION TROUBLE. IT WON'T GO INTO REVERSE

Hi John:
I would first look at the automatic transmission fluid level and make sure it is to the full line.

My reverse transmission stop working suddenly this morning when I started the car. All the other forward gear positions work. When I engage the automatic transmission to reverse and accelerate i just hear...

OK, I would first check the fluid level in the transmission to verify that it's full or topped off.

Usually transmission fluid and filter changes will not correct physical problems with the solenoid not going into reverse, and get rid of strange noises.

Changing the fluid is more like a preventative measure against malfunctions, but once damage is done it's probably permanent.

You probably are looking at a transmission rebuild in this case, unfortunately.

Reverse went out on 1978 Chevy pickup

Nothing. Also it will be much cheaper to find a used matching transmission with low (less than 80k miles) than having a shop rebuild the old one. In most cases the used transmission will far outlast the rebuilt one. Check on the web by Googling "used transmissions".

Reverse stopped working in 1978 chevy pickup

Most likely the reverse part of the transmission has gone bad. It will need to be overhauled.

GMC automatic transmission

I'm told and read a sun shell may be broke. Common problem for this vehicle. Shop will possibly rebuild and use aftermarket kit parts to correct problems the transmission had originally. Cost is probably between $1300 to 1600 to repair. Good luck I got the same problem on a 97 Jimmy and 3 shops said the same thing.
