Question about 1997 Subaru Legacy

Legacy wagon tail light replacement

I wish to replace the tail light assembly in my 1997 Subaru Legacy wagon. This is the tail light on the body of the car - not on the wagon gate.

I can see two nuts that I've loosened. What else must I do to free the assembly from the body? Will I need a sealant with the new tail light assembly?

Thanks,
Richard

Quite helpful. However, a silicone sealant was required.

There were 4 nuts; two were hidden behind behind panels as you said. Removing the panels was not difficult and the new tail-light assembly went on and works fine.

The one thing youll find with subaru's is that they like to put nuts in funny places that are hard to access. There are either 3 or 4 nuts holding the tail-light assembly in place, which means youll need to take out most of the inner panels to access the others. You should not need a sealant unless the rubber seal is done for or there is water inside the car. Hope this helps

In side the trunk behind the light you need to fix is a small access panel. Just open and replace bulb. Very simple and straight forward. Good luck and have a great day.

I need to replace right brake light bulb in a 1991 Subaru Legacy

If this is a sedan, open the trunk and remove the bulb bracket for the burned out lamp from the rear of the tail light assembly by twisting it about 1/8 turn and then pulling it out. Now you can change the bayonet base lamp by pressing it slightly into the socket and turning it ccw just a small angle and the bulb will sping out. Installation is the reverse.

If this is a wagon, open the rear hatch, and behind the rear light assembly is a louvered plastic grate. Remove the grate by pushing the two plastic latch tabs toward the center of the grate and swing the grate out etc. Now remove the bulb bracket for the burned out lamp from the rear of the tail light assembly by twisting it about 1/8 turn and then pulling it out. Now you can change the bayonet base lamp by pressing it slightly into the socket and turning it ccw just a small angle and the bulb will sping out. Installation is the reverse.

2005 Subaru Outback XT - Real Tail light- bulb replacement

1. Open the rear hatch, and look down towards the bumper, in the direction of the tail light bulb needing replacement.
2. You should see the dark colored plastic trim piece, which is held in place by two small plastic body style philips head screws.
3. These wil only 'loosen' a little bit, you will need to slip a fingernail or some other slim item, underneath the heads of each of the screws, and pull back on them firmly by grasping the body of the screw, not the head (which is flimsy, and can crush if squeezed).
3. remove the plastic trim piece - it can be achieved by lifting out and towards you - set aside.
4. Using a 10mm socket or wrench, unscrew the upper and lower bolts holding the taillight assembly in place.
5. the taillight assembly is now loose - it can pulled rearwards, and will slide off of the small guide slots holding it in place.
6. The bulb is a twist lock style, underneath the tan cap- twist the cap counter-clockwise, and it will pop out. The bulb is a number 7440, for the running light/ brake light, and a 7443 for the turn signal. a 3757 will not fit through the cut out hole in the taillight assembly.
7. Re-assemble in reverse, making sure to check the function of the bulb PRIOR to re-assembly.
Good Luck.
