Dodge will not start

Sounds like a starter fault, before you condemn the starter, clean and check all power connections, battery to earth, battery to starter, starter to engine, engine to chassis, chassis to body. Could try using a single jumper cable, connect from earth of battery, to a good earth point on the engine, if that makes a difference, then fault found.

1950 Austin A40 Devon suddenly won't start.

Assuming that the car is using a negative earth. (Negative battery terminal earths to the body/chassis)

The starter solenoid may have some bad connections. If this vehicle has a separate starter solenoid on the rear firewall under the bonnet, try bridging the big terminals with a jumper lead (red) and see if the solenoid/starter works. Some of them even had a press button between the main terminals. Try pressing the button if it has one.

If none of the above works, take the jumper wire directly to the starter motor from the batter possitive. If this causes the starter to spin, you clearly have a bad solenoid.....replace it.

NB! Be careful not to short out the jump lead against the engine or any other earth or you will see lots of sparks etc. You will not get a shock from this activity!

Possibly better to clip the jump lead to the starter main connector first and then touch the other end to the battery positive.

(I am assuming that the batter is charged up and properly connected.)

Also check the earth wire from engine to chassis. You can make do by using the other (Black) jump lead from the engine block to the battery negative.

I have a 94 gmc 1500 pickup the tail lights are back feeding in to brake lights. i have a brake controler that lights dim when i turn on the tail lights. or if i turn on the flashers tail lights get brite...

this looks like earth bleed.

this happens if one of the lights can not find earth so it bleeds through the next light to its earth thus lighting the wrong lights.

ensure the earthing to the lights is good.
Q. have any of the light cluster front or rear been replaced at any time since the problem started? it could be that the chassis earthing was not replaced on replacement of the light fittings.

find the chassis earth lead or connection point, ensure a good clean fit and maybe use some WD40 to ensure a good connection of the nut or clip. the earthing maybe part of the securing screws or bolts that hold the light in place.

I hope this was useful.

The batt is strong but engine is having trouble turning over. Cranks well then stops...starter motor? also - does the starter effect the flow of fuel to the engine? it's acting like it does

The starter does not have an effect on fuel, but your problem is more than likely a earthing problem. Check the negative battery lead, there should be an earth going to the chassis/body. Clean up the contacts with a wire brush. Follow the negative lead down to the starter motor. Again clean up the contacts and tighten the bolts holding the wires on.

It sounds as if the vibration from starting is rattling the earth wire off which stops it suddenly.

Vote for me when this works thanks.

hi b4 renewing starter ? try this connect a jump lead to the battery negative/earth connector then the other end of lead to a suitable earth point directon engine try starting now if it works ? then problem is the batteries earth connection lead to the engine and chassis/body ? is not good or corroded/loose but by using /bypass earth direct to engine will verify this if above works as you say jump/doner battery does not work ? also check the leads/wires connected to starters solenoid are clean/secure ? this is considering age of car ?

Horn, wipers and indicator lights all not working after gearbox change

hi from uk the fact you mention g/box has been changed would suggest that your probs with electrics would point to either an earth cable from battery to the body/chassis has not been refitted after g/box removal/refit or the lead that provides power for electrics which connects to the starter solenoid on the same connection as the positive + lead from battery is either loose or not connected ? with horn/wipers /lights not working these components get their earth from the cars body/chassis however is it possible that starter lead was disconnected b4 disconnecting the battery earth lead ??? thn accident of shorting to earth(spark ) which would blow the fuses for these components ? check em out ?
