it can be complicated to pass the smog test! check your gas cap. thats the most common reason for a fail! they will not tell you that. you can have it code read at any autozone or advance auto for free if your check engine lights on.[only] otherwise you're at the mercy of the only garage you trust. it may be a bad 02 sensor, you have 2 [cost around $75.00]each. it may be stopped up catalytac convertor,do you smell rotten eggs when driving or at idle? thats a sign of bad convertor. good luck and thank you for choosing fixya.com
Sounds like a bad PCV valve or bad EGR valve. replace the PCV valve ( about $10) locate and watch the EGR valve .. it should move up and down when you rev the engine.. spray the shaft with WD40 if its sluggish or stuck.. it may help.
Here are a few things to look at:
Have you replaced the air filter? Have a compression test done on the engine, could possibly be a leaking vale. If any vacuum hoses have been removed from the engine they will have to be re-installed. Solid Lifters out of adjustment can cause incomplete combustion. Make sure engine is reaching proper operating temperature (eg. thermostat). Do not use low grade (octane) fuel for test.
Clean oil, tire pressure, brake drag?, every little thing counts.
I would be doing a compression test , could be burnt valves or a broken camshaft . I have seen the V6 3.8l Buick engines snap camshafts just in front of the 2 rear cylinders this causes the front 4 cylinders to work perfect but the back 2 do nothing at all. Do the compression test and let me know what your readings are ...... Hope this helps
