Question about 1997 Ford Explorer AWD

Removal of heater core

Cannot figure out how to remove this, everything from the inside of the engine is removed I can see the heater core, but cannot be removed from there, took out the passenger side airbag, seems like it has to be reached from there somehow, but cannot figure out what else to do? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks Deb

    thanks but that that is for up to a 1994 explorer and ours is a 1997 and does not look like that at all unfortunately. We had seen that already. We have searched the internet and have come up empty, we may have to get a manual after all. Thanks so much for trying. Deb

I have a 92 ford exp i just replaced my heater core it only took 45min to 1 hr your heater core can be reached from the glove compartment its right behind it.n

The heater core can only be removed after the dash board is removed from the vehicle. To remove the dash board the steering column needs to be dropped down or better yet also removed from the car. In addition to these two items being removed, the evaporator box in the engine compartment may need to be removed to provide access to the plenum box mounting nuts. Once the plenum is exposed, the box needs to be pulled back toward the rear of the vehicle and the core is removed through the top. It may seem like a tremendous undertaking, but it's the proper way to do it. Cutting holes in the plenum box or attempting to seal the core with these "magic" additives you pour into your radiator will only create more and larger problems for you in the future. The only short cut I can recommend, is instead of draining your radiator, pull one of the hoses off the core stubs and turn it back to the other stub while you're performing the repair. This will save you some time by not having to refill the entire system and bleed the air from the engine block. The Ford repair manual states 7.1 hours for the complete job. A good mechanic who stays at the repair can do the entire jobs in about three hours. TAKE YOUR TIME AND DON'T FORCE ANY COMPONENTS OR ATTEMPT TO BEND OR PRY THEM OUT OF YOUR WAY. Good Luck

1. Disconnect the battery cable.

2. Remove coolant recovery tank and lay aside.

3. Place a clean pan under the vehicle and then disconnect the heater core inlet and

outlet hoses at the heater connections. Quickly plug the heater hoses and support

them in a raised position. Allow the coolant in the heater core to drain into the pan

on the floor.

4. Remove heater distributor duct to distributor case attaching screws and distributor

duct to engine cover screw and remove duct.

5. Remove engine housing cover.

6. Remove instrument panel attaching screws: above, at windshield, all lower screws

and tight lower LP. Support bracket at door pillar and engine housing.

7. Lower steering column, and raise and support tight side of LP.

8. Remove defroster duct to distributor case attaching distributor to heater case.

9. Disconnect temperature door cable and fold cable back for access.

10. Remove three (3) nuts at engine compartment side of distributor case and one (1)

screw on passenger side.

11. Remove the heater case and core as an assembly. Tilt the case assembly rearward at

the top while lifting up until the core tubes clear the dash openings.

12. Remove the core retaining strap screws and remove the core.

13. To install a new core. Reverse Steps l-10 above. Be sure core to case and case to

dash panel sealer is intact before assembling unit.

How can i get the heater core out of my 2006 toyota corolla


Hello, the heater core is a small heat exchanger located inside the truck, similar to the radiator at the front of the truck. Coolant is circulated from the engine through the heater core and back to the engine. The heater fan blows fresh, outside air through the heater core; the air is heated and sent on to the interior of the truck. For Toyota Pick-ups/Land Cruiser/4Runner 1989-1996 check this reference repair guide...



Heater Core - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
(see Figure 1)
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the heater unit assembly. Have a lot of towels handy for the leakage of coolant that may spill into your interior.
  3. Remove the fasteners securing the core to the unit, remove the plates and clamps. Pull upwards to remove the core from the unit.
To install:
  1. Inspect the core fins for any blockage. Using compressed air, clean them.
  2. Install the core into the unit placing the plates and clamps into position. Tighten the core screws.
  3. Install the heater unit into the vehicle.
  4. Fill the cooling system.

I need to install a heatercore on a 92 olds cutlass 3.3 engine not sure howto install need instructions on removal and replacement.


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.
  2. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core inlet and outlet connections in the engine compartment.
  3. Allowing residual coolant from the heater core to drain. Cap the openings.
  4. Working inside the vehicle, remove the lower instrument panel sound insulator and look for where the air blows to your feet.
  5. Remove the heater floor outlet duct screws or clips and remove the duct.
  6. Remove the heater core cover by removing the attaching screws and clips.
  7. Remove the heater core cover.
  8. Remove the heater core retainers and remove the heater core
  9. Reverse order to install leaving the covers off at first then connect all hoses, refill and check for leaks before putting covers back.

Find out how to replace heater core in the front


The front heater core in your truck is inside the environmental station, which is inside the dash, the entire dash will have to be removed in order to access it, in order to access the heater core itself you will have to remove the environmental station, requiring the draining of the engine coolant and the a/c system. Your best bet is to buy a Haynes or Chiltons manual and follow the steps to perform this repair, or take it to your favorite repair shop. The core itself should cost about 60 dollars. I did my own and it took a good 5 hours to remove and replace everything. I hope this helps, let me know.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
  2. Disconnect hoses from heater core.
  3. If equipped with A/C, remove evaporator/blower housing as follows:
    1. Discharge A/C system, then disconnect hoses from expansion valve.
    2. Disconnect electrical connector and vent tube from blower motor.
    3. Remove console, if equipped.
    4. Remove lower instrument panel attaching screws, then the lower panel.
    5. Disconnect electrical connections from A/C relay, blower motor resistors and A/C thermostat.
    6. Disconnect vacuum hose from vacuum motor.
    7. Cut evaporator/blower housing to heater core housing retaining strap, then disconnect heater control cable.
    8. Pry retaining clip from rear of blower housing flange, then remove the three retaining screws.
    9. Working from engine compartment, remove evaporator/blower housing attaching nuts, then the evaporator drain tube, Figure 1.
    10. Remove right kick panel, then the instrument panel support bolt.
    11. Pull right side of dash outward, then rotate housing downward and towards rear of vehicle until studs clear dash panel. Remove housing from vehicle.
  4. Remove heater core to housing retaining screws, then the heater core, Figure 2.
  5. Reverse procedure to install.

Personally, I'd pressure test the cooling system then look at the heater core to see if it leaks. It may just be a loose clamp or leaky hose.

92 F150 heater core


Basically all you need to do is:
1. Remove Glove box
2. Disconnect several wiring harnesses while working towards the engine bay.
3. Remove plastic housing surrounding the Heater Core.
4. Make sure inlet/outlet hoses are disconnected from inside the engine bay.

That should get her to pop right out

  1. Drain the cooling system to a level below the heater core.
Disconnect the coolant hoses at the heater core tubes.
  1. Remove the glove compartment.
  2. Disconnect the temperature and function cables.
  3. From inside the passenger's compartment, remove the 7 screws that secure the heater core access cover to the plenum chamber. Remove the cover.
  4. Remove the heater core.
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Replace any damaged sealer. ... and if your having a problem tiring to get the heater core itself you have to wiggle it till it clears ..they can be a real pain to get out.

Here a are the instuctions to remove it. I did not know if you have A/C or not so I included both for you.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Without Air Conditioning
ALL MODELS
See Figure 1
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the coolant recovery bottle.
  3. Place a pan under the van and disconnect the heater intake and outlet hoses. Quickly remove and plug the hoses and support them in an upright position. Drain the coolant from the heater core into the pan.
CAUTION When draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
  1. Remove the heater distributor duct-to-case attaching screws and the duct-to-engine cover screw. Remove the duct.
  2. Remove the engine cover.
  3. Remove all the instrument panel attaching screws.
  4. Carefully lower the steering column. Raise and support the right side of the instrument panel. Refer to for further details.
  5. Remove the defroster duct-to-case attaching screws and the two screws attaching the distributor to the heater case.
  6. Disconnect the temperature door cable. Carefully fold the cable back and out of the way.
  7. Remove the three nuts from the engine compartment side of the distributor case and the screw from the passenger compartment side.
  8. Remove the heater case and core assembly.
  9. Remove the core retaining straps and remove the core.
To install:
  1. Install the core.
  2. Install the core retaining straps.
  3. Install the heater case and core assembly.
  4. Fasten the three nuts on the engine compartment side of the distributor case and the screw on the passenger compartment side.
  5. Connect the temperature door cable.
  6. Install the defroster duct-to-case attaching screws and the two screws attaching the distributor to the heater case.
  7. Install the steering column.
  8. Fasten all the instrument panel attaching screws.
  9. Install the engine cover.
  10. Install the duct. Install the heater distributor duct-to-case attaching screws and the duct-to-engine cover screw.
  11. Connect the heater intake and outlet hoses.
  12. Fill the cooling system.
  13. Install the coolant recovery bottle.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable.
1990-95 MODELS With A/C

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the engine cover.
  3. Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts. Lower the column carefully.
  4. Remove the upper and lower instrument panel attaching screws. Remove the radio support bracket screw.
  5. Raise and support the right side of the instrument panel.
  6. Remove the lower right instrument panel bracket.
  7. Remove the vacuum actuator from the kick panel.
  8. Disconnect the temperature cable and vacuum hoses at the case. Remove the heater distributor duct from over the engine hump.
  9. Remove the two defroster duct-to-firewall attaching screws below the windshield.
  10. Under the hood, disconnect and plug the heater hoses at the firewall.
  11. Remove the three nuts and one screw (inside) holding the heater case to the firewall.
  12. Remove the case from the van. Remove the gasket for access to the screws holding the case together. Remove the temperature cable support bracket. Remove the screws and separate the case. Remove the heater core.
To install:
  1. Install the heater core.
  2. Assemble the case and fasten the screws.
  3. Install the temperature cable support bracket.
  4. Position the gasket, then install the case in the van.
  5. Fasten the three nuts and one screw (inside) holding the heater case to the firewall.
  6. Connect and plug the heater hoses at the firewall.
  7. Fasten the two defroster duct-to-firewall attaching screws below the windshield.
  8. Install the heater distributor duct.
  9. Connect the temperature cable and vacuum hoses at the case.
  10. Install the vacuum actuator at the kick panel.
  11. Install the lower right instrument panel bracket.
  12. Fasten the radio support bracket screw.
  13. Fasten the upper and lower instrument panel attaching screws.
  14. Fasten the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts.
  15. Install the engine cover.
  16. Connect the battery ground cable.
  17. Refill the cooling system as necessary.

Antifreeze leaking on firewall out of rubber elbow?


I had the same problem and it is the heater core. Hope the info below helps.

The heater core is inside the firewall under the center of the dash. It requires removing the center console to reach the plenum cover.

Drain the coolant. Be Prepared for a few skinned nuckels. First dissconnect your battery You will be working around wiring harness' so just tobe on the safe side I would disconnect the battery.The easy part is removing both glove boxes, remove the console remove the covers under the steering wheel remove the cover surrounding the the radio and heater controls, now remove the first plastic cover it will have two ports going into the center console, you might have pull back the carpet on both sides to get it out. After you remove that cover you have to remove the next cover that hides the heater core. When that is removed you should see the heater core there are four bolts two top two bottom holding silver bands remove these and the heater core will be loose. When removing everything make sure you get all the screws I missed two hidden screws and broke the cover. Some are torx some are nut heads.Now that is the easy part the hard part is removing the heater hoses from the back fo the engine. If the You are sure the heater core is shot usually coolant on the carpet is a good indicator just snap the two plastic pipes going to the heater core. This will make it easier to access the hoses. There is no easy way to remove these is is a matter of determination and patience. I would never change a heater core without changing the hosesyou will see that it will be worth new hoses because you will not want to repeat this procedure again.
