New battery and new starter in my 95 dodge dakota and it still wont start

Thought it was the battery, put a new one in. Thought it was the starter, put a new one in.. It ran fine for a few days and it wouldn't start. A friend told me to go out and put it in neutral and push it back and forth a few times, I did and it started! What is going on? I just bought it last weekend and have already had to spend almost 300 more bucks on new parts and fluids!

Did the vehicle start when you fitted the new battery?

Yes, and it ran for a few days. The starter was put on Sunday and ran fine up until I went to leave yesterday afternoon! I just purchased it last weekend.

what did you change first the battery or starter?

  • Anonymous Mar 06, 2012

New battery on Feb. 28th and new starter on March 4th

Thought the problem was the battery because we took it to Auto Zone to be tested and they said it was bad. they also tested the alternator and they said that was good. When it didn't start the other day, I hit the starter and it started. Yesterday when it wouldn't start I put in neuteral and pushed it back and forth a little bit and it started.

Well there ya go. when you hit the starter you jogged the starter gear and it hit the flywheel square. when u rocked the car it again moved the flywheel in position.

Heather, new battery new starter. it sounds like the starter ring on the flywheel is worn. did anyone check the voltage output on the old battery. did anyone check the old starter? when you turn the ignition key is there any clicking sound from the starter?

2005 Dodge Dakota engine wont turn over

Assuming that your battery is not dead, and that you have checked the battery connections, the most likely problem is a bad starter solenoid and will need a new starter.

My 95 Dodge Dakota won't start. The electrical seems to be working fine but the engine won't even try to turn over

sounds like you may have a defective starter solenoid, the contacts in the solenoid get burnt and u get a no crank.
