Question about 1999 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

Check engine light

I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee and one day it stalled, the check engine light came on, it ran really horrible, the throttle was non responsive, and only went about 8 MPH. I turned it off and it ran fine after a couple minutes. The dealer said the computer showed Trans and fuel pump. The dealer stated he thought it was the computer or a relay. He reset the computer and it ran fine. I took a long trip and the light came back on with no symptoms. A week later I started it it ran like that again then turned it off and it ran fine. How can I figure out which it is or does anyone have an idea?

No the light stays on now. The engine is a v8, all wheel drive, I just had the trns fluid changed, it has cruise, traction, ABS, and all are working fine. The Vic even runs fine except for when it does that weird ****, which is twice now.

I brought it down and reset it and waited for it to trip again and I went back down and retested it. The codes are P0432 and P0420. I also want you to know that 30 days ago I had to get my cars emissions tested to renew my registration and it passed fine.

The first time I checked it one of the problems was a code with something to do with the throttle. I left the paper I wrote it down at auto zone and that is why I went back. It was like p3 something along with the other 2 codes for the banks. The first time it happened it was raining out. Is this something I can fix myself or if I take it a mech what doI tell him? How much should it cost?

Please be advise that if you drive this and the check engine light is flash on and off. you should not drive it any more till you find the problem because you can cause more damage to the truck if the light is flash. there are many things that could cause this running condition: TPS, EGR, Bad injector, Idle air control and more would need to know codes that are in the computer, engine size 2 or 4 wheel drive, does it have A/C, Cruise, traction control, ABS brakes, then I maybe able to help you

Is there and Autozone near you, that you could take it to and have them get the codes out of the computer so we could see what's happen.

The codes that you gave me are:

P0432 Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

I do not believe they are related to the problem, but there is one other question I would like to ask. When this happened, had it rained that day or the day before? The reason I ask is I have had 2 vehicles that the (TPS) Throttle Position Sensors got water in them. The seal on the case of the sensor was bad. They acted in the same manner as you described. It could be going bad too it 9 years old,

There is something else I just thought of does your exhaust sound Ok and is it in good condition. I have had the inside of the muffler come apart. The baffle will break and go across the outlet end of the muffler causing the car to loose all power because the exhaust is restricted causing backpressure on the engine. If you turn the engine off, it will fall down and be ok again for a while. Normally this happens at higher speeds above 35-40 MPH. Usually you can hit the muffler with your hand and listen, it will rattle or sound like there is sand in it. This is a freak thing but it does happen and the average mechanic will not find it unless, it happens when he is checking out.

If there is any more information that you can think of, that happens when this occurs please leave another comment the more information I have the better and easier to help you. Sometimes even if you don’t think it is related, it may steer me in the right direction

If it is the (TPS) Throttle Position Sensors. It cost about $29.99 at Autozone, You can also look up the instruction on how to install it there too. You can go to here's a link

make sure I have the right engine and model. Then you can decided if you would be comfortable doing it yourself. I am not sure if this is truly your problem. You can try it if you wish, if it is and you've do it yourself you'll save I would say about $150-$200. If you decide to take it to a mechanic you could print this out and take it with you to help tell him whats going on, and tell him what you have told me. Hope this helps.

My jeep keeps stalling on me and the check engine light never comes on, people tell me it may be the fuel pump. i have been told it cant be hooked to compuetr because of the check engine light not com

A stalling problem doesn't have to turn on the check engine light . Try some basic thing's like cleaning the throttle plate (body) air passages for the IAC - idle air control valve . There are videos on youtube , also check for a vacuum leak !

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee / Approx. 133,000 miles - Owned since new and very well kept. Only at idle, engine stops working but would start again after 20 min wait, would work fine for a few days and do it...

I would try your pickup coil in your distributor. I would also be checking the o2 sensors. both of these things can cause problems like this and would not set off the check engine light.
