After checking the easy stuff first like low oil level, if it is high RPM(revs) & shifts hard(lurch when it does shift) then I am thinking the transmission filter & oil need to be changed. The transmission filter acts as a suction screen on an automatic transmission & as it collects contaminants to protect the inner workings of the transmission, it becomes plugged which greatly affects the ability to shift especially the high gears at faster acceleration.
try checking all your connections coming out of tranmission. make sure all the plugs are making good a connect. I had same problem. All it was, was a plug not plug in very good.
are there any codes? Does it shift ok in 1st and 2nd? sounds like your over drive shift solenoid or your 3 and 4 shift solenoid is stuck and needs to be replaced
check the condition of the oil and see whether you have filter in the gear box. Do a flush after renew the oil and filter and clean also the oil cooler of the gear box.On renewing the filter and oil also add a WYNN'S Auto transmission treatment additive.
I hate to say this but I never flush a trans You risk getting dirt in the solenoids
I would suggest a trans shop and explain the issues & go with them on a road test before you leave it
Stay away from the auto parts stores & chain stores because in the end you will go to a repaie shop & they will check for codes & starts a diagnostic process of component testing
So the trip to see what the codes are for free i think is a waste of time
Possibly the Throttle position sensor (TPS) This controls a number of things one of wich is when the transmition changes gear. I recomend you have the vehicle scaned though & that should give you an answer.
Definitely not good. The transmission is slipping internally due to worn gears and clutch packs. It will have to come out for rebuilding, IMO. Have a transmission shop check it out.
Good luck.
