Question about 1985 Chevrolet Chevy

1 Answer

1985 Chevy 1/2 ton

My son's girlfriend, both with slight mental handicap, won a free 1985 Chevy truck in a local radio station drawing. They've had nothing but problems since she drove it home. Currently, the dash lights wont come on and the brake lights weren't working (my son just told me he wired the brake lights to the head lights so they work now, huh?) The truck runs but dies on occassion, the belts squeel, and it uses oil. If you could just tell me how to get the dash lights to come on, that would be great.

If you have no dash lites< I would suggest checking either of the following as thse are the most common problems 1) chec your fuses 2) test the headlite switch, as for the brake lites I would again check the fuses and then move on to the brake lite switch and see if there is power going into the switch and coming out of the switch with the brake pedal depressed, if not it's the switch if there is power trace the wire back to the brake lites checking all connections in between for power. Finally test the lite pig tail ( socket ). Good luck and rember to rate all the solutions that you get on FixYa, thanx

Check the fuse-able link going to the cab portion of the firewall, check by gently pulling apart on the wires on either side of link.

Yes, this is the pulse connector, it feeds the radio timed pulses of power in order that iyt may retain the correct time and your station choices.

Where to find diagram for wiring harness for 85 chevy suburban?

You can check out your local auto parts store for a Haynes or Clymer repair manual. I know that AutoZone, O'Reilly's, and Advance Auto Parts all carry these manuals at a cost of $20-$25. They contain the wiring diagrams for the major electrical systems. Unfortunately that's probably going to be one of the few sources for a vehicle that old. I happen to own an 85 Chevy Silverado 1/2 ton. What type of problem are you experiencing? Perhaps I could assist you.
