Tail lights and brake lights not working - not fuse - what can it be?

The tail lights and brake lights aren't working, but running lights do. It's not the fuse - what else can we look for?

    Country Curt-

Sorry tail lights do work, brake lights do not - will check switch on brake pedal. It's the rear turn signals that do not work as well - front signals do, back do not.

Brake light switch, located on upper brake pedal should be checked, that is most likely your brake light issue, but U say tail lights aren't working, but running lights do, tail lights and running lights I would consider to be the same, so can u clarify that for me? Let me know how the u do w/ brake light switch, and if u have issue w/ tail lights?

Here's the info on brake light switch.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
    See Figure 1

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
The locking tab on the connector must be lifted before the connector can be removed.

    1. Raise the locking tab and unplug the wiring harness at the switch.

    2. Remove the hairpin clip from the stud and slide the switch up and down. Remove the switch and washers from the pedal.
It is not necessary to remove the pushrod from the stud.

Fig. 1: Brake light (stop light) switch mounting-1995 vehicle shownTo install:

    1. Installation
is the reverse of removal. Position the U-shaped side nearest the pedal
and directly over/under the pin. Slide the switch up and down trapping
the pushrod and bushing between the switch sideplates.

    2. Connect the negative battery cable.

Jef1105, a couple more possibilities, the obvious of course being the bulbs, I'm assuming u checked to see if they were burned out, and also, how are the contact points of bulb and socket? Any corrosion? Clean up contacts w/ fine sandpaper, coat w/ dielectric grease (available at any auto parts store) to protect connections from corrosion. curt

SOURCE: Left rear brake light stopped working but bulb and fuses are OK.

These are Dual Function Bulbs. They control the Parking Lights and the Brake Lights. This Bulb is Burnt out on the Brake Coil inside the Bulb. I have actually seen Bulbs that were Bad But you could not Tell by jast looking at them. It should be fine with a New Bulb. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

SOURCE: my tail lights dont work,

check the wire harness that runs from inside the trunk on the drivers side follow it down to the tail light and make shure the wires are not damaged or unplugged remove cover on the drivers side inspect the bulbs the holders and the wires and dont forgt to retighten all grounds that you find on your travels this should get the rear tail lights working also check the brake pedal switch up on the metal part of the brake pedal arm follow it up tp the brake pedal switch and acuate the switch by hand and check the wire voltage coming in and going out when pressing the brake pedal ok give this a shot

SOURCE: tail lights

I had this same problem with a nissan. When I hooked up the aftermarket stereo there was a wire for lumination and the aftermarket already has this covered so hooking it up blew the fuse for the tail lights.

SOURCE: Tail lights don't work, but brake, flash and hazzard work.

generally when the fuse is ok and the bulb is ok the problem is corrosion of the ground wire and connection to the frame, or corrosion in the bulb sockets. for starters go to any auto parts store and get an aerosol can of contact cleaner especially for auto bulbs and connections.

Im looking for the fuse for the right tail light

You do not have a separate fuse for each side, if the left side works, replace the bulb in the right side that isn't working.

Dashboard lights and rear exterior running lights not working. blinkers, flashers, and brake lights work. regular tail lights won't work. Not finding a blown fuse. not finding any fuse listed as "tail...

the fuse is labled 'brake'

I would replace the fuse... and then have someone stand to the rear of the vehicle and watch the lights come on as I applied the brake... if the fuse blows again... note which tail light did NOT come on durring this test and replace the bulb.. it is grounding to itself and causing the short.

Interior dash and running lights dont work but my signal and brake lights work else works

Look at fuse #18, a 15 amp fuse, in the fuse block. This fuse powers both the tail lights and instrument cluster lights. Usually both of these light systems are powered by the same fuse so when your cluster isn't lit up you'll know right away that your tail lights aren't working as it's not safe to drive without tail lights. Your brake, turn, and head lamps are powered by different circuits. Hope this helps and good luck!
