Question about 1992 Oldsmobile Bravada

1991 Olds Bravada 4.3 v6 rough idle and backfiring.

I have a 1991 Olds Bravada with a 4.3 tbi engine. It is idling rough and backfiring through the tbi when you first crank the engine, could it be the timing or something like that? I changed plugs wires cap and rotor, also replaced the ignition module. Please help!!!!!

Ok guys, let's fix these things here!
Just went through this myself, so do the following:
Go to your local parts store and buy a Haynes Repair Manual.
You need to read the book first, learn how the ECM (Electronic Control Module) works. You'll see that there are alot of sensors and components that make up the fuel emissions bologna.
The nice thing about this system is not only does the ECM control all electrical functions, it also trouble-shoots it's self. When a component or sensor goes out, the ECM stores a code for that event in it's memory. You can use the Haynes Repair Manual to put the ECM into diagnostic mode and thus read any codes present.
So, all that's left is replacing what the EMC tells you too! :) Good Luck!

    Check the fuel pressure, i just fixed mine it was a bad fuel pump. I changed everything you did before i found it with a full tank of gas. so i took the saw-all and pulled the carpet back cutting 8 in around the hook in the back of the truck being careful not to let but an inch of the blade go in so as no to cut the hoses. then i replaced the pump and have a nice access panal to the pump also. hope this helps all with this problem, cutting and pump replacement took 15 min.

You have a vacuum leak,the ecm is giving too much fuel. because the manifold vacuum is low,the ecm thinks the rpm is much higher.
if you look at the throttle body injectors,you will see there is far too much fuel.the computer is also advancing the timing forward,causing the backfire.
another thing is to make sure the ground ******** the block is ok and any chassis grounds.
third ,check inside the distributor and make sure there is no magnet cracks near the rivets in the assembly,or any corrosion.

Sounds like you mixed up the spark plug wires. re check your firing order

Fails idle emissions test hc


High HC?
****** ignition timing....this will lower HC but raise other values during test.
Do you have room to increase other values?
After test return timing to the most advanced position without spark knock under load for best MPG.

Having rough idle and backfiring!


Still have a wire crossed somewhere. That is why you are getting the backfiring. Recheck firing order and make sure it is correct.

Check the hose between the inletmanifold and the pipe to the brakeservo it normally gets old and a crack in so the engine sucks false air on cylinder 4, causing engine to run rough or uneven.

Hello;
Most likely cause is a broken valve spring on one of the intake valves. Seat pressure is light enough to idle smooth but on acceleration the dynamics increase the pressures and the spring can not keep up. Hangs the valve open breifly and you get a backfire through the TBI.
