Rear Hatch will not open

Just bought a '97 4Runner. The rear hatch will not open. Tried penetrating oil, manual pressure. Any ideas?

I have the same problem. My guess is that rust in and of the latch is the culprit. Let's face it, the Japanese cars were known for rust problems in the past. I would be amazed to find out that this problem was totally rectified by 1997. If that is in fact the case? what IS the solution?

Same issue with sticking latch. The handle is poorly designed is my guess. I agree with pushing as you pull handle together to unlock, that works best for me. I live in a desert area, don't think rust has much to do. bad design, like the poor cupholders. Otherwise a great truck. Simple issues, would be nice to find an answer.

Mine sticks too. I push the door while I pump the handle fast and that seems to engage it if the push doesn't work.

I have, no HAD the same problem! After a few trips to my friend's dad's shop for a shot of white grease up in there, he told me to simply give it a little kick when squeezing the latch! I laughed at first because really, my mechanic told me to kick my car! Well, we did just that for a while, maybe 2-3 years, and now it just opens. It opens just fine. We do give her latch a shot of WD-40 periodically, more for preventative measures, and that's about it. So, don't worry, just grease her up, give her a little kick in the @$$ and everything will be just fine. Plus while you're in the "kick the car while trying to open it" phase your friends and family will get a laugh! At least mine did!!

Mine sticks too. The only thing that works for me is to push on the door before you pull the handle. I'm guessing that it takes the pressure off the latch.

try spraying the latch with seafoam deep creep or some kind of penetrating oil and let soak in-gently work the release a few times between sprays.

HI there, the rear hatch on our 2001 chevy blazer wont open, we have tried the remote the internal release in both the console and the actual door and the release button on the outside, nothing is working....

Eddie, are both the rear door and glass not opening? I had a personal issue with my 05 Envoy where both would not open, I had to pull the peek hole right above the latch on the inside, work with a screwdriver to release the door and get it open then, spray the linkages with a good penetrating lube while trying to free the linkages parts. You'll see what I mean

Rear hatch won't open. Intermittently. Is there a way to manually open the hatch so that i can get to the latch?

There is a little plastic circle on the inside trim, near the bottom of the rear hatch. Pop this off, and you can get a finger inside, or better yet a screwdriver. There is a metal piece labeled L3, I believe. It doesn't take much pressure, but you must manually push this and it will release the lock, and you can push the door open.

it isn't that the cable is off I believe it will be that the mechanism is siezed. you will need to gain entry from the inside through an access hole in rear hatch door. once you get the door open you will need to remove the latch and oil it with penetrating oil and work the latch until it works freely

remove the panel from the rear hatch and you will notice a piece of the sound deadener has moved up against the power lock activater, the sound deadener is made up of a rubbery tar kind material that goes almost gooey when warm,as far as the key, keep spraying a penetrating oil inside the door lock and gently but forcibly work the key in and out and back and forth but do not twist too much and break the key off
