Guages on instrument panel died 1998 jeep cherokee

The guages on my instrument panel are dead in my 1998 Jeep cherokee. I have no other problems, but my manual doesn't list which fuse(s) control it. I checked the panel under the hood and no listing for guages there eiter. Please help!

I have the same problem on my '99 Sport. I know it is a connection fault, as all the guages come back with a good tap on the dash or just the right bump in the road. It seems to be happening way more frequently now and I must soon address it. Thanks to advice I just found here, I can go at it soon with confidence.

Thanks and remember, never play leapfrog with a unicorn.....

Others have had this problem too. Most times it's a loose connection behind the gauge cluster.:

When you take the dash apart to get at the back of the guage you'll see that the connectors for the panel are attached to a molded piece of black plastic and the panel sits on top of them. The solution I used was to actually cut the plastic back (you can break it back too...) and insert the plugs tightly, then put a dab of hot glue on top and bottom to keep them from backing out. It keeps them nice and snug and you can remove them in one minute with a razor knife if you need to. After about a year I haven't had the problem since.

BTW - your mileage is not accurate if you have this problem. I noticed that when the gauges are off, it does not count mileage...went about 5000k miles without an oil change once...Just some addt'l info.

I know it's not a factory fix, but it costs about $1 for a glue stick and it only takes about 30min.

Hope it helps you.

if the other light is ok and the fuel gauge is only dead, may be you have no more fuel, try to refill fuel, if the battery is also dead replace new battery.

I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee. My issue is with the interior instrument lights, none of them work. I checked ALL fuses inside and out of the vehicle and all tested GOOD. Guages work and Radio display works...

It is the headlight switch, very common problem on jeeps, my 96 grand cherokee dose the same but most times the lights will flicker. Try spraying a small amount of WD-40 in to the panel dimmer switch and then move it around and kind of jiggle it around.

Instrument cluster going dead after airbag light comes on

I had the exact same issue with my 1999 cherokee. None of the gauges worked, the red airbag light was on, the horn didn't work etc.... After going to several different mechanics, it was determined that i had a bad ECM computer. I got online, went to autocomputer exchange.com, got a remanufactured computer, put it in... and all the gauges now work. I highly recommend doing this, because the dealership will screw you for almost $1000 for a new computer... whereas, I paid only $225 for the one from autocomputer exchange. Anyhow, everything works great now.

Speedometer, tach and all up front guages stop working randomly!!

I answered on just like this one about a month ago. What's happening is behind the instrument panel is a plug that likes to come undone. Remove the instrument cluster, clean the bulkhead connector and re-install.
