2001 Hyundai Santa Fe Alternator gone bad-dealership said...

I know my alternator has past away... Brake light and Battery light on (Googled this and everyone said they come on when the alternator is bad) and running like a bad alternator with the high pitch sound but still cranked this morning to bring it to the dealership. Dealership just phoned and said it would be $1000.00! They said to fix the brake light switch, the alternator ($460), and it needs a new battery! It cranked this morning and has never died on me? They said about 2 years ago that I would need a new steering pump...well two years later my steering pump is still running just fine!

All fluids are fine. Light came on the same time battery light came on. I have read that the brake light and the battery light will come on at the same time in the santa fe's if the alternator is going out. Has anyone ever heard of this?

    thanks in advance.

Hi if you mean the brake indication light on dash is on? then this light will illuminate when ??handbrake applied it allows a switch to release and put lite on then goes off when h/brake pushed off ok? it will also come on if brake fluid level is low ? due to displacement as brake pads wear? so check/top up level ? and if there is fluid leak on one of the systems front/rear? this also lites the brake warning lite and more serious ? as for alternator fault ?? you could get an indipendant diy check using a volt meter to check output and also if it is faulty either overcharging or under output to battery? eithr of these two faults are not beyond your diy abilities and you can obtain alternator cheaper by shopping around motor stores if you need one if h/brake switch is fault on lite staying on ? this is adjustable location adjacent to h/brake take a look? hope this helps and inspires you ? best wishes from the uk!

SOURCE: How do I reprogram the key fob on my 2005 Hyundai

Well, you basically have only 3 choices:
1. Pay the fee at the dealership
2. Purchase the high-dollar equipment that is required to perform the programming procedure
3. Forget about adding another key fob to tor vehicle.

The brake and battery light came on? I changed battery and the lights didnt go off?

Battery light usually indicates alternator failure. Check alternator.
Brake light indicates brake issue. Brakes must be inspected for leaks, check reservoir fluid level, etc.

I bought a 2001 Santa Fe a month ago. Since then we have replaced the alternator twice. Could there be something else causing the alternator to go bad? The battery is brand new as well.

alternators are electric motors in reverse basically, only a couple of things to go wrong, bearings and internal wiring(brushes)as you dont say what the problem was,and when i worked for hyundai they rarely went,so i am loathe to guess......did you buy new parts or from a dismantler?????? i dont know.....

1. Brake Light Came On 2. Steering got stiff

Check your belt/tensioner, and alternator. Either the belt has no tension or your alternator has gone bad.

Brake light and battery light came on at the same time

Have your alternator and alternatorwiring checked, if the ALT light goes on, so does the brake. So it could be that the alternator is faulty. Also check the fuses.

Is it the alternator?

check the alternator it is probobly bad , because the aleternator charges the battery,, when it quites working you only have the battery to run on for awhile then it will go dead because the alternator is no longer charging the battery as a rule of thumb check the voltage on the battery with a voltmeter positive on positive negative on negative if its unnder 12 volts alternators bad hope this helps

2002 HYUNDAI SANTA FE

I had the same problem with a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. While driving to work as I pressed on the gas the brake and battery light would come on. When I applied the brake, the lights would go off. When I got to work I turned the car off and then tried to start it, nothing. The car made a funny sound while running and I could smell somethig smoking. I replaced the alternator and all is good again. When removing the alternator the bottom lifts off the mounting bracket, you cannot drive the bottom bolt back through the mount as I tried to. Simply remove the nut on the bottom bolt and remove the top bolt, then lift the alternator out.
