Question about 1992 Pontiac Sunbird

1 Answer

Radiator fan not working

The fan doesnt' seem to come on. Temperature gage rises, but if you put it in neutral and rev it a bit, the temp. gage goes back down. Fan will not kick in when temperature starts to rise.

Check your thermostat and check to see if the electric motor has power or not may be a damaged wire or a fried fan motor, you can also check the fan motor by running a power lead from your battery.good luck

half5, what is the year and make of your car? usually the fan motor will plug into the electrical harness, this is where you can check for power. the temp sending unit should be located in the vicinity of the thermostat region again if you let me know the make model and year we should be able to find it.good luck

half5, the temp sensor should be located on the drivers side of the engine block, the sensor screws in and there will be a plug connection with 3 wires coming from it,it will most likely be black but could also be grey hope this helps you good luck.

In a 2007 Pontiac G5 is overheating would it help to turn on the air conditioner

No it does the opposite Gale as it puts more strain on the engine to drive the compressor.

You need to make sure the radiator is full of coolant with no air pockets. People get confused with filling the radiator and filling the overflow reservoir. There is a cap on the radiator, remove it and top it up, run the engine and keep topping it up. Also make sure that your HEATING in the car is on FULL heat and FULL fan. Squeezing the radiator hoses will help to dislodge air. The level will rise and fall when the thermostat opens up. Rev the engine a bit, top up one last time and when there are no bubbles, replace the radiator cap. Turn the engine off and then top up the overflow reservoir. Use antifreeze mixed to the manufacturers specs, usually 50/50.

Have a look at some of these videos.

the usual suspects are:
stuck shut thermostat
clogged raiator
dead water pump
low coolant level
it's sunday, rovers don't work on sunday.
Then again, maybe its wednesday, rovers take half a day then. 25322555-21syibu3fgwpdxocjnkpw0ib-5-0.jpg

Transmission could be running hot. Most times tranny fluid also runs through the sides of the radiator. Or a transmission cooler somewhere near the radiator and in some cases will make temp gauge rise

Heater runs hot then goes cold

Do you have a temperature gage in your instrument cluster? When the temp goes cold, does the temp gage rise? Check your coolant level both in the radiator and the coolant recovery tank under the hood, and fill as necessary. If that is OK, then check your serpentine belt for wear and/or slippage around the water pump. Lastly, if you have a temp gage and are noticing fluctuations in the reading, you may need to replace your cooling system thermostat. Good luck.

Is it normal on 94 grand prix 3.1 for the temp. gauge to NOT stay at a steady temp. all the time? mine seems to go up to 210 at a stop light then go back down after i start rollin again, i just had air...

Have you checked your cooling fan to see if it is working propely? Let the car idle and get warm and listen for the fan to kick in (if they are electric) or just watch to see if the fan starts to spin faster if it is the old school type with a clutch. Have you replaced the thermostat? A bad one will let the temp rise since it opens too late and then the temp will drop off. But it won't due this only at a light and it will do it infrequently.

p0217 is coolant over temperature. the fan clutch may be slipping or the thermostat is bad. changing the thermostat would probably be the easiest and most inexpensive fix to determine the problem.

Hi Code P 0217 does point to the thermostat but it also points to the wiring, cooling system, and the temperature sensor, to check the thermostat start engine then once the temperature gauge in the car reaches normal the thermostat should open and the top hose that goes into the radiator will warm up quickly as the thermostat opens, if the thermostat is stuck in it's open position the top hose will start warming up before the engine reaches it's working temperature, hopefully i have explained it clearly,

Temperature gage rises and engine overheats on our honda accord. thermostat has been changed and it is not any better. whats next?

The next thing to do is to observe the car as it idles for 10 minutes to ensure the electric radiator fan is coming on if not replace the fan relay if that doesn't work replace the coolant temp. sensor that activates the relay that activates the fan after that ti can only be the fan itself that is if the fan is not coming on.

On Load the working temperature rises

at 100 degrees c the aux fan will come on. Make sure that fan is working properly and also that your fan clutch is working properly. If this is happening with the a/c on there is an updated temp switch for aux fan operation on the receiver drier. It should be red in color. The temp is going to rise under different loads but that is a bit extreme in my opinion. Make sure you have a 50 50 mix of water and coolant and that the rad. cap seal is o.k. assuming the rest of your cooling system is in proper working order.
