Problem for Chevrolet 1998 Cavalier

98 Cavalier 2.4L engine stumbles at 2000-2500 rpm

The car stumbles and misses at 2000-2500 rpm but takes off if the accelerator is floored. I have changed the coil pack, plugs, all sensors on the injection system, fuel filter, forward O2 sensor. The engine runs great with the front O2 sensor unplugged, but gas mileage is poor. MIL sets a lean mixture code.

- I had the wiring harness traced when I had it in for the original diagnosis. After a $300 bill they could only speculate on a host of other thigs to try. I can do that myself. I don't need to run up the bill further. I haven't fixed the problem yet. I am living with the O2 sensor unplugged. It runs fine and with gas back under $2 it's not such an issue. I may try an OEM O2 sensor when I can afford it ($80 vs $20). I am afraid it is the PCM as my Speedo is not working now either.

- Thanks for the suggestions.
My Speedo is electronic (no cable) so I am going to try swapping the cluster. I know this will be a pain with the passlcok code reprogramming but I haven't got any other ideas.
I will check the condition of the hoses for pluging or cracks. Thanks for the helpful hints.

Could be a short in the wiring for the O2 sensor.   I currently have the same issue only my car finally threw a code after two days of it acting up.  Code 106.  Changed the MAP sensor and it now throws 108, MAP sensor high voltage circuit.  Ah the joys of cold weather and broke down vehicles.  But I know that you wont always get a code with a short.  Let me know if you fixed the problem.

- I know there was a recall on the cavaliers for a cover that wasn';t installed over the pcm, which is located behind the engine shroud which is in the passenger side front wheel well in front of the wheel.  I am in the middle of a lunch break while getting at mine.  Just call the chevy dealer and they should be able to tell you how to go about finding if your car was in for the recall unless of course you've done that.  I'll tell ya I liked it better when cars didn't have all this electrical ****.
About speedo:
Inspect
If your speedometer needle doesn't move, or if it flutters, your speedometer cable may be bad.

To determine if it is the cable, disconnect the cable casing from the transmission and from the back of the speedometer on the instrument panel. Draw the cable out from inside of the casing. The cable looks like a twisted piece or wire. If the cable is broken or if it is dry or brittle. It probably needs to be replaced. If the cable is intact and the same length as the cable casing, the problem is likely the speedometer head.

Replace:
When replacing a speedometer cable, you can either replace the cable and the casing, or you can replace just the cable.

To replace the cable and casing, unscrew or uplug the cable unit from the back of the speedometer and from the transmission. Screw or plug the new cable unit onto the speedometer and the transmission.

To replace just the cable, unscrew the cable. Remove the cable from inside of the casing. Insert a piece of universal cable cut the lenght of the casing into the cable housing.

Heat the casing fittings so that the glue on the ends is hot. Then, attach the cable to the cable casing and reattach to the transmission and speedometer.

- Found out that my problem was a plugged hose for the map sensor. Actually the nipple the hose for the map sensor connects to on the manifold below the throttle body was plugged. All I did was take some Wal-Mart brake cleaner and sprayed it in the nipple and attempted to stick a needle through it. Finally I was able to stick the needle through and proceeded to use a pipe cleaner to clean it. Car has never run better.
