Question about 1997 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

Sudden brake failure

My '97 Sierra 1/2 ton truck suddenly lost its brakes as I was driving yesterday. The brake pedal went down to the floor, and luckily I was driving at only 25 mph so managed to get it home safely. Transmission is manual. What should I have checked? Fluid, brake lining, drums? Would like to talk intelligently to my local mechanic when I tow it in. I am a woman, and in my town mechanics really take advantage if a "female" just drops off a car and says "Fix it."

You need to check the fluid in the master cylinder first. if it is empty you have a leak somewhere. if full then probably a bad master cylinder.brakes just being worn will not cause you to lose all pedal. while if they are worn should be replaced if they say you just need a brake job then be suspicous

I was driving it and i pressed the brake and all of a sudden the brake pedal and clutch pedal both went down a piece by the pedal broke an now it wont go in to gear

Hi

the Hydrolic clutch has failed by the sound of it, the clutch on his car shares fluid with the brakes hence why both pedals went down. you might be lucky and the slave cylinder might have failed or lost pressure, this in fact is very common on this car.

Have the slave cylinder checked out and look under the car for any fluid leaks

What do you mean no brakes? pedal was stiff would not press down?, pedal went to floor? That needs to be checked. if there are no fluid leaks, I would suspect the master cylinder.

I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500HD LT with Duramax Diesel. I have recently lost all brake pressure and can depress brake pedal all the way to the floor. My ABS light came on yesterday while spinning...

Unless you really know what you are doing it is best to get a mechanic to repair this. People's lives and safety are at risk and you could be held legally if something went wrong with your repair job. I would not touch it.

Parking brake petal goes to floor

you either have air in the brake lines, a cracked brake line, or low of brake fluid... either way you will need to bleed the brakes

have you had the brake pads changed recently?

1997 Ford F-350 7.3 L Diesel..........brake failure

With no leaks and a little braking action returning by pumping the pedal I would suggest looking into a master cylinder. Low brake fluid level in the master cylinder will cause the brake warning light to illuminate (possibly, also the ABS light).

If the truck has the 7.3L diesel, it will have a vacuum pump which supplies vacuum for all vacuum accessories. I believe if the vacuum level drops below 10 in. of Hg, the brake light will illuminate. If the vacuum pump fails you'll know it as the brake pedal will require quite a bit of effort to effect any braking effort.
