1999 Peugeot Diesel Estate car has developed starting problem, when turning key in the ignition the glow plug light goes out as it should do but the car will not start first time, only starts when ignition is operated 4 or 5 times then a big plume of white smoke comes out of the exhaust and she finaly splutters into life, problem has only developed this week (since weather has turned colder) she is due a service and oil change could this be the problem?

i again forgot to say the one behind the diesel pump is bit of a pain!!! plus as the cars not getting any younger when the glow plug light goes out leave it a few seconds longer before starting and it should go first time!!

You don't say where you live. If temp. is below 32 f. - you could have congealed fuel. A weak fuel pump then cannot serve injectors properly. My 505 estate wagon had a similar problem when I quit driving her every day. You need fresh fuel and drive often. I eventually installed, had installed, an inline fuel heater and also keep her in the garage nights. She starts and runs well always now. Good luck with yours. We live in northern NH.

My 308 estate has developed an intermittent locking problem. It will lock all the doors except the drivers door. Any ideas?

The driver's door has the most use and the most wear. The wiring connecting the driver door electrics to the main body flexes many times more than the other doors and the resulting problems usually occur first to this door.

It is not unusual for the harness to develop some internal breaks where most flexing takes place, though Peugeot seem particularly vulnerable to problems with the plug and socket making reliable contact after much use where plug-in doors are used.

If your doors are the plug-in type I suggest you check there first to ensure reliable contact.

Why does my 2004 (Land cruiser) PRADO 3000 Turbo Diesel 5sp- have issues starting when it's cold? It turns over and over does nothing, then when it starts, I get a big plume of smoke, then it idles rough...

glow plugs are activated if look on the dash when you turn the ignition just before cranking and you should see a light that stays on for several seconds then goes out and then you should crank the engine ! sometimes when its really cold or the glow plugs are worn try turning the ignition on and off each time light goes out 2 or 3 times to get more heat on the plugs then start ! if this doesnt work then glow plus and system needs checking !

I have an 1993 Ford F250 turbo diesel truck that won't start. I've been told, that the glow plugs are not warming up. Where are the glow plugs and is there anything I can do to warm them up or fix? Do they...

Are you waiting after turning ignition key on before actually moving key to start position? My diesel I turn key to 1st position;bells and lights;if engine is cold an amber light that looks like a lamp filiment comes on...wait until that light goes out before engaging the starter.

I have renault scenic megane 02 diesel i had provblems starting have had the glow plugs replaced but now when i put key in ignition glow plug light comes on and goes off within one second try to start car...

hallo
1.5 or 1.9 dci does not engage glow plugs until -4?C or below. so, check if fuel does not drain (in the morning). or if batery is week. try start with cabels (jump start) and see if start sooner.
another thong is if EGR valve always stays open (stick)
hope it helps

Car wont start diesel engine Could it be the 'glow plug'? what is a glow plug? how can i test?

A glow plug is a small heating element in the cylinder. It heats the diesel so that starting can be made easy. Is your car standing in the open frozen parking If yes, then it would require a lot of battery power to first heat all the cylinders and then turn the engine to start. What we do in such conditions is to light up some fire under the car and heat the fuel system enough for the diesel to warm up a little and thus save the battery for glow plugs. Generally, all vehicles have an indicator light which comes on when the glow plugs are ready for starting. The diesel will ignite on compression, but it has to reach the cylinder and thus has to be flowing. In cold it freezes and hence the need for glow plugs and the heat. If it is parked in heated parking then the need for glow plugs decreases.

Wait to start light doesn't come on on my 1999 ram diesel it starsts a little hard on cold mornings

The Cummins does not have glow plugs as mentioned above. It has intake heaters. I have a 99 also and it is a cold natured girl on a cold morning. You should have a block heater to plug in when it is below 40 F. The electric plug should be on the passenger side just inside grill on the hood. You can plug it in all night or a couple of hours before you are ready to go and it should help. Also, since your wait to start light is not working, the intake heaters may not be working. Check them out.

Won't Start & No glow Plug Light on Dash

I am with a similar problem...

After putting on a new sump i found that the starter motor would work cranking the engine but no power is going to the glow plugs. The light on the dash does not appear either.

The relay for the coils does click but that is the end of it. I have a suspission it is the imobiliser but after taking the battery on and off several times to reset... still nothing.

There is fuel, good battery (fully charged), fuel lines are clean pressurised...

Any ideas???
